Like many new-gen sports games, 2K Sports’ latest title NBA 2K15 has a face scanning technology that allows players to scan in images of their own and upload them into the game as faces to use on players.

NBA 2K15 is a really strong basketball sim, and one of the best sports sims overall. What it does well, it does very well, and its sports movie-like storytelling and outstanding presentation has yet to be replicated by any other sports game. Already, I’m feeling the itch to take it to put Andre’s hurt feelings behind me and take my game to the next level with the Knicks. Coach Rivers is counting on me.

Last year introduced The Park, now known as MyPark which is a community focused online mode tied to your created player. There are three different street-ball factions that you can join, each with strengths and weaknesses effecting player attributes. Here, players can form squads and roam around a virtual lobby of eight basketball courts to play pickup games. The most competitive teams can use their virtual winnings to place wagers against others. In the first days after launch, the 2K servers have been up and down sporadically. The games we were able to get into have suffered from minor lag, making timing troublesome and resulting in frustrated competitors simply driving to the basket. Hopefully it won’t be too long for 2K to iron out the connection problems as it will be interesting to see how MyPark evolves over time.

The NBA 2K series continues to deliver the best professional basketball experience available on consoles and PCs. Though some strange visual bugs might rub a bit of shine off of an otherwise excellent package, there’s no denying how well NBA 2K15 plays. No game mode seems like it doesn’t belong, as every player should be able to find something that he or she adores. By improving both the shooting system and the RPG-esque MyPlayer mode, NBA 2K15 has taken the next step towards becoming the ideal sports game. You may not ever be able to run pick-and-rolls with Anthony Davis in real life, but you’re closer now than ever before.

Overall NBA 2K15 is a fun game. In fact, all of the NBA 2k series manage to be fun games. It’s just a question of whether or not you want to purchase this one, if you purchased the last one, and that’s hard to say. I enjoyed the revamped MyCareer and MyGM modes, but in the end I really just wanted to spend more time online. The online suite is nice, of course, but the gameplay simply hasn’t changed much. Basically NBA 2K15 is an expansion pack for NBA 2K14, and it’s a good one! But don’t expect to be blown away by something entirely new and different. You are getting the same game again, just with a few extras, and it’s up to you whether or not that’s worth a full price purchase.
