Of course there’s still a solid race element and times when that really comes to the fore. Two bikes jockeying for first right at the last, for example, still offers some of the racing genre’s purest thrills and triggers some real adrenaline – whilst using the power of the Big Rig to plough through a group of bikes is a satisfying tactical move.

In a sense Motorstorm’s single player element is a breath of fresh air in that it attempts to pump new life into the standard arcade racer formula by giving us a ‘proper’ story but, it’s that same story that stops us from expressing ourselves. You have no choice over your vehicle, its design or the look of your racer, for example. A shame considering the wonderfully diverse logos, stickers and liveries you can unlock via the multiplayer components.

Ultimately it’s the environments, not the cars, that define the MotorStorm experience. For the first time in the series, Evolution Studios has taken the action into an urban setting, and the California Bay-inspired City is the perfect host for the carnage. As always, tracks offer multiple routes to the finish line, with buildings, ramps and tunnels each taking the race down a different path. Like its predecessors, there’s just as much vertical variety as there is horizontal, which spreads out each race nicely.

MotorStorm has come just at the right time: the PS3 needed a burst of frantic energy and Apocalypse certainly delivers. It’s not perfect, but it represents pure arcade racing with a central device that never feels tired – the earthquake scenario managing to stretch itself over forty different events and still feel fresh at the very end, when the game turns everything up to eleven.
