guardian.co.uk review
Rowdy, animated and exhaustingly vigorous, Metal Gear Rising is a game that retains the capacity for stealth, but actively encourages players to rush in, katana blazing. The Metal Gear myth has never before appeared so agile, fresh and youthful, but more than the setting its Platinum’s virtuoso coders that shine throughout, the object slicing a marvel of high-speed 3D manipulation. A technical masterpiece, Rising offers a funfair ride approximation of Konami’s brooding series, but one with more than enough capacity for the Bayonetta veteran to express their dexterous expertise.

So it’s a bit on the short side, sure, and the visuals have a tiny hiccup here and there. Everything else about the game is perfect. Seriously, it’s exactly right. If you like your action to be intense, dramatic, and totally ridiculous, this could very well be your game of the year.

Revengeance can now be considered part of the pantheon of action games, right alongside of Devil May Cry 3, Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, and other classics. Platinum created a deep and rewarding combat system, layered it on top of an action packed story that captures the most outrageous moments of the Metal Gear Solid series, and added their own signature mark.

Obviously, I enjoyed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance quite a bit and I think you will too. The story is a tad disappointing, but also oddly entertaining in an over-the-top fashion. However, I think if you’re a Metal Gear fan that comes for just that, you’ll be better off checking your expectations at the door. It doesn’t tie into the existing canon all that well, and outside of a single cameo and a handful of references to Metal Gear Solid 2, there’s not much tying this back into the standard Metal Gear universe. Provided you can get past that point, you’ll find a richly satisfying experience in Metal Gear Rising’s combat system, and I’d say that alone is well worth the asking price.

Metal Gear Rising is not Solid but still, unmistakably Metal Gear. Despite its lack of seeming significance to the larger scope of the franchise and less complex plot, it does no harm to the setting and features enough action-packed combat that nobody should really give a toss about the story anyway. Seasoned fans should be aware all the same that this is a wholly different series, taking a different approach with a team that has a wildly different set of skills and experience. The work they do well is stunning and overwhelms the shortcomings to mild grievances at worst.

At its best, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance feels great to play and will sate all but the most demanding of gorehounds. Even at its worst it’s still a blast, and is every bit as playable, polished and well-presented as Platinum’s other titles to date. It fails to knock Bayonetta off its pedestal as Platinum’s crowning achievement, but Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is immense fun while it lasts, and proves more than worthy of more than one playthrough. It’s also more than worthy of a place beside the other Metal Gear games, which in itself is no mean feat.

Franchise aficionados will know how convoluted Metal Gear plots can be. Revengeance also stumbles into preachy territory and tries to provide comment on America, politics and terrorism. This is expected for the most part and doesn’t become too overbearing until the final hour, where cutscenes take an even greater role in proceedings. If the sociocultural commentary becomes too much, Virtual Reality missions offer a direct chance to get down and dirty.

The metronome of action, bouncing between hurried assault and the deliberate cutting of Zandatsu, is mesmerizing enough to sustain an entire game. The effort overall, however, including the pacing, acting, camera and level of polish, feels out of step with the rest of Platinum’s output, not only within Revengeance itself but in the developer’s other works like Vanquish and Bayonetta.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance may bear the acclaimed name, but it is far from what that series has become known for. It is an action game in the vein of Ninja Gaiden or DmC, with plenty of gore to spare. Sure, the story still focuses on military and political propaganda in a ridiculous fashion, but it lacks that certain charm (and the lengthy cut scenes) we are accustomed to in the series. Platinum has done a great job at salvaging what was potentially a lost game, and fans of Metal Gear will undoubtedly enjoy the references within. While not as polished as others in the genre, what it lacks in functionality, it makes up for with personality and blade mode.

Using the “you got chocolate in my peanut butter†methodology, Metal Gear Rising marks the culmination of two great studios finally coming together, and much like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, the result is devilishly delicious. Rising represents some of the most fluid and enjoyable combat mechanics to grace a modern action game, presented in a manner so over-the-top that it’s hard not to laugh hysterically at the sheer ridiculousness of the affairs. Featuring a story better than a hack ’n’ slash ought to have, fleshed out with hours of Codec conversations, it wholeheartedly deserves the “Metal Gear†moniker. Even with the game’s brevity and blisteringly difficulty working against it, it remains a respectable entry into both the Kojima Productions and Platinum Games canon, forever rendering Raiden as “Jack the Ripperâ€.

Even with that in mind, I found Metal Gear Rising to be a thrilling and engaging experience. The swordplay is fun, and it’s really fascinating to see the different spots where either Kojima’s or Platinum’s signature styles shine through. It also has a wild final confrontation that shows elements of both, doling out some heavy-handed political preaching while also putting a man-sized ninja cyborg up against… well, something way crazier (and dirty-mouthed) than a man-sized ninja cyborg. If you’re a value-minded individual that doesn’t tend to replay games, Metal Gear Rising will only make you angry. But if seeing the state of the post-MGS4 world while slicing your way through everything that gets in your way sounds like a good time, well, that’s because it is.

The collaborative efforts of Platinum Games and Kojima Productions culminate in an absurdly exciting action game grounded in the Metal Gear universe. Revengeance is unapologetic in the way it indulges your greatest power fantasies, often doing so with such a grandiose display of style that you’ll be unable to wipe that ever-present smile from your face. It’s fast, flashy, and fun–and it’s easy to excuse Revengeance’s hiccups when even the simplest battles rival the best cutscenes in any previous Metal Gear.

I’m a longtime Metal Gear fan, and Bayonetta is one of my favorite games of this generation, so I was elated when Konami and Platinum Games announced their partnership for Revengeance. However, this title isn’t Bayonetta wearing a Metal Gear skin; whether you are hoping for a meaningful expansion of the Metal Gear universe or a gratifying action experience, Revengeance falls short. Brutalizing cyborgs and hacking giant mechs to pieces is fun, but the restrictive design and lack of precision keep Raiden from capturing the best of both worlds.

Truthfully, Revengence isn’t the sort of game that will be remembered for the scores that critics gave it. My review reflects my position as a big fan of this sort of game, but I’m certainly not one of the best players in the world. It’s the tiny portion of players who will be able to S-rank the highest difficulty who will, in the coming months, be able to shape Revengeance’s legacy. For the rest of us, it’s an extremely solid action game, a brutal, crazy ride that fits in nicely with the rest of Platinum’s oeuvre, but one that falls just short of being an instant classic thanks to some finicky controls and muted design choices.

When Revengeance is firing on all cylinders, it is a sight to behold. Watching Raiden tear through enemies while a dynamic speed metal soundtrack plays in the background is undeniably impressive. After spending an extended amount of time with the game, though, it becomes obvious that beauty is only skin-deep. Revengeance is more impressive to watch than it is to play, and it’s certainly no Bayonetta.
