Metroid: Other M features both 2D and 3D gameplay in both first- and third-person perspectives. The game marks the return to style of the traditional series as opposed to the Prime series, though the game would have a “harder edge”.

Metroid: Other M is a fantastic game in its own right though, and one that will take you many hours to completely finish. As a result we have no problem whatsoever recommending it to fans of Samus’ previous exploits.

As a cinematic game, Metroid: Other M isn’t quite what a major first-party title should be. But the solid gameplay more than makes up for those imperfections.

A fleshed out story is not, however, the only evolution on offer from Team Ninja and Nintendo. Other M also magnifies the excitement one felt in Fusion when encountering new enemies, turning even normal encounters into set pieces.

All in all, Metroid: Other M is a compelling title that will appeal to longtime fans of the series and newcomers alike. It’s a polished, well-rounded experience. While it may not be reason enough to buy a Wii, it’s a game that should definitely be in the library of any Wii owner.

The story was certainly developed with longtime Metroid fans in mind, but it’s also nice that the game is easy to pick up and play for Wii owners who don’t have much appreciation for the series. Other M is definitely worth picking up and totally worth the wait.

Metroid: Other M is a solid game with an absorbing story that many games seem to lack these days. Team Ninja’s influences are very apparent throughout the entirety of the title but it is all pulled off fluidly and doesn’t feel out of place at all in the Metroid timeline.

Except, of course, that in Nintendo’s new tradition of saving the hardcore content for last, the end credits of Metroid: Other M should actually be considered a new beginning, as you’re dropped back into the world with new explorative abilities, new enemies to fight, secrets to find and a 100 per cent completion rating to aim for. After finishing the story in under eight hours with only 22 per cent of items found, we were certainly pleased to see that one of the greatest, most thoughtfully designed Metroid games we’ve ever had the pleasure of playing still had much more to offer.

The biggest criticism we can level at the game is its length; while by no means a short adventure, with no other modes of play being offered the degree of replayability you’ll get out of it is dependent on the pull of collecting all the hidden items. We would have happily welcomed some sort of survival mode – the combat mechanics would have been more than up to the task – but alas, this was not to be. Overall, Other M is a polished, engaging and hugely satisfying adventure, and a successful re-imagining of the Metroid experience that suggests our favourite bounty hunter’s future is likely to be every bit as rosy as her past.

Slowly clomping through eerie corridors is spooky and lonely in that recognisably Metroid manner, but it does feel like two minutes of Resident Evil in a ten-hour Metroid game. Neither technique offends as such, but in Other M’s brash and confident whole they feel noticeably less surefooted.

If you’re like me and didn’t necessarily get into the FPS Metroids but enjoyed Samus back in the 8 and 16bit days, you owe it to yourself to check out Other M. Here’s hoping Team Ninja and Nintendo continue to work together for some sequels.

Metroid: Other M is a huge step forward for Nintendo, a company that’s been reluctant to push story over gameplay. It’s certainly possible that what the Other M team did for Metroid could potentially shape the direction of other Nintendo franchises, but for now this is a great first step.

Other M is a great entry in Nintendo’s long-running sci-fi franchise. It tweaks some of the gameplay elements that have become staples of the series, but it still manages to feel like a Metroid game. The storytelling is beautiful and cinematic, and the gameplay is enthralling and wonderfully crafted. Unfortunately, the game’s short length really takes away from what could have been an outstanding title. Despite that minor setback, though, Metroid: Other M is a solid Wii game worth playing whether you’ve played a Metroid game in the past or not.

Guess what? The unlikeliest of developers has created a game that manages to encapsulate huge chunks of the series’ traditions, even as it pushes it onwards in a slick new direction.

It may not fully nail every one of its ambitions, but Other M at least gets close on all of them. More importantly, it really feels like an honest-to-goodness Metroid game.

While it isn’t the “instant classic” we’re all clamoring for, it is a solid title that deserves to stand on its own merits; in other words, don’t unfairly judge it against your expectations because even though it doesn’t live up to the high bar that we’ve set for the franchise, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a worthwhile experience in its own right.

Nintendo gambled once with the Metroid series, and that gave us the fantastic Prime series. What a breath of fresh air that franchise was. Nintendo once again gambled with Metroid, and Team Ninja was their choice. I like that Nintendo takes risks, but this time they’ve run out on their luck.

Other M divides its attention among too many viewpoints and gameplay styles to nail any one of them. Thankfully, the entire game soars so high in the closing moments that it ends up a must play for franchise followers.

Metroid enthusiasts won’t want to miss this, and nothing I could write could encourage them to take a pass. But to put it bluntly, Other M simply doesn’t meet the high-quality standards fans have come to expect from not only the franchise, but from Nintendo’s routinely-spectacular first-party line-up.
