gaming-age.com review
If you’re at all a fan of shooters, then I urge you to run out and pick up Max Payne 3. It’s a great follow-up to one of the best third person shooter franchises around, and while it certainly changes up familiar elements of the series, pretty much all of the changes work out really well. The shooting is, bar none, some of the best you’ll see out of this generation of consoles, and really begs to experienced. So do yourself a favor and pick this one up, it really shouldn’t be missed.

The high quality of the production extends into location design and the meticulous detail that has gone into every inch of Max Payne’s world. The graphics are superb throughout with interiors of nightclubs and bars just as impressively detailed as the memorable stroll through the dangerous ghetto of Sao Paulo, where you can almost smell the marijuana and gun powder.

Most environment surfaces hit by bullets crack or shatter in different ways. The explosion of glass on a framed picture looks fantastic, and most of the cover Max can seek refuge behind can be chipped away or outright destroyed. The cover mechanic works without a hitch most of the time, however, I did run into five or six instances of Max’s gun running into collision problems with cover, causing his firearm to point toward the ceiling and fire shots upward.

There are plenty of games which are celebrated for their gameplay but lack anything in way of story or character. Max Payne 3 is a different type of proposition. The gameplay is simple yet satisfying, but it’s entirely in the service of a strongly-authored narrative. Players aren’t at the liberty to roam, to explore, or to shake things up. Some might find this too controlling, but in return for your freedom, you’re rewarded with a mature genre piece which is also a finely-realised character study. Action games continue to inch the dial towards 11, sometimes at the expense of their narrative integrity. Max Payne 3, however, has the conviction to reign in the action, imbue it with purpose – the spectacle still sparkles but it also makes sense.

This game is almost unrivaled in its realistic third person action and does an amazing job of continuing the Max Payne fiction. With the return of the iconic voice over and nonstop action It’s nice to see Rockstar continuing to push the bounds of its franchises and Max Payne 3 is yet another example of this. With a lengthy campaign and a multiplayer full of leveling and unlocking Max Payne 3 is a title that will hold your attention for a while and show you one hell of a ride in the process. With only a few minor hiccups keeping it from being a perfect game, Max Payne 3 is unquestionably a must have.

Bleak, sometimes frightening, always powerful and quite often shocking, Max Payne 3 takes the third person genre about as far as it can go, and most likely does the same this with this generation’s now ageing console hardware. Polished to near perfection, with just a few minor sticking points that dent – ever so slightly – what is overall a wonderful slice of gaming. Enjoy.

Max Payne 3 is a rip-roaring success on many levels. It relentlessly hammers at your emotions and nerves and keeps you perched on the edge of your seat. The borderline unfair difficulty towards the end of the campaign, noticeable issues with the shootdodge, and a couple minor glitches notwithstanding, this is one hell of an experience. I just wonder why I was never covered out there in that stadium…my buddy’s got a sniper rifle and he said he’d cover me. And yet, not a single shot was fired. …the hell was that about, Rockstar?

The multiplayer is frantic and will keep you coming back for more. It make take a few hours and a handful of asskickings for you to get on even footing with the rest of the player base. With some patches we could be looking at one of the best multiplayer experiences of the year. Combine that with a campaign that can (and should) be replayed a couple of times, as well as a quick and fun pair of arcade modes, and you have an impressive amount of content. I won’t condone the fact that the game will have a boatload of DLC but at least Rockstar is nice enough to offer a cost friendly season pass. Max Payne 3 is a successful resurrection of an amazing franchise and nothing will ever replace jumping out of a window and gunning down guys in slow motion.

The production values are laudable, as is the visual prowess, but this only makes the overlooked issues jar even harder. It’s also relentlessly one-note, and while a beautifully arced shootdodge complete with last-gasp headshot looks undeniably cool, it looks just as cool after the first hour as it does after the tenth. But these are gripes that partly result from the lofty expectations attached to both the series and developer, and shouldn’t detract too far from the enjoyment of the overall package.

Max Payne 3 tells a dark and gripping tale that benefits from stellar writing, compelling characters and a careful attention to detail. Rockstar Games has a solid reputation among the gaming community and their latest title lives up to the studio’s pedigree. If you’re a fan of classic Max Payne and want to be taken on a journey that tips its hat to a number of series’ mainstays—if at times to its detriment—then Max Payne 3 is just the fix you’re looking for.

However, combat is put to good use in multiplayer where those same mechanics haven’t been done to death, and those looking for a new flavour of online multiplayer would do well to give Max Payne 3 a look; its smart incorporation of series mechanics makes it fresh enough to distinguish itself from the myriad of first-person shooters dying to be Call of Duty, and an easy migratory destination for Uncharted players.

The continuing saga of everyone’s favourite terrible cop has been a long time coming. Maybe too long. It’s not bad by any means; there are moments of high-fiving, air-punching joy here. The trouble is it’s both as eloquent and repetitive as its lead. Moments of glory clash with irritating, baffling design decisions to ensure that Max Payne 3 isn’t quite the sequel we all hoped for. Brilliant in places, utterly frustrating in others.
