This highly anticipated chapter of Commander Shepard’s story sees Earth invaded by giant machines, which appear to be both sentient and aggressive. The people of Earth and the civilizations of the galaxy must be called to arms to drive them out, or mankind may perish forever.

usatoday.com review
And that’s where Mass Effect 3 shines. It’s an incredible universe BioWare has created, with so much dialogue and back story, that it is seemingly impossible to tear yourself away. With combat that again shows signs of improvements, the final installment in this trilogy is out of this world.

The downside to the 360 version is the need to swap discs; this doesn’t just happen once or twice during the story like in Mass Effect 2; this happened five times for me. PlayStation 3 owners don’t have to worry about this at all, but I still give The Edge to the Xbox 360 version because you can play the entire trilogy on that console.

There’s a war memorial on the crew deck of the Normandy listing casualties incurred over the course of Shepard’s years-long mission to avert galaxy-wide genocide. The names of crew lost in battle against Saren and Sovereign, in the appropriately named suicide mission through the Omega 4 relay, the Collector attack on the Normandy – they’re all there.

Mass Effect 3 is the ultimate conclusion to Shepard’s story. While there will surely be a continuation of the franchise, the game has wrapped up this trilogy in what has become one of the best video game and science fiction stories ever told. The gameplay is as solid as ever, the storytelling is as deep, mysterious and shocking as ever, and the scale of the game’s events are felt through every minute played. If you have a favorite character, you’ll constantly be worried about his or her fate and future. No other game will have you as emotionally invested and no other game will have you begging for more.

While there is a definite finality to Mass Effect 3, the wealth of plot-based variables are likely to inspire second, third and fourth playthroughs, not just of the latest game but of the entire trilogy. Mass Effect 3 is truly unique in this respect, leaving no stone unturned and offering full closure, yet still leaving players with countless ‘what ifs’. It’s these unanswered questions that have driven the Mass Effect experience, and will motivate players to see their mission through to its glorious end.

I don’t expect a lot of people to not pick up Mass Effect 3. I think the reviews will all echo the same sentiments most of us already know. However, those who were maybe not as excited for it, or had fears it would not end on a solid note, can relax. This is a fitting end to an epic trilogy. I am not certain that any game could keep up this level of quality for as long as this series has. It is nice to see it end without feeling like it died prematurely. If Shepard and crew make a return, it won’t be met with criticism or cynicism. Instead, we will welcome them back with open arms. Mass Effect 3 is about as good of an ending as anyone could have possibly hoped for. You have to experience this early contender for Game of the Year, and it’s only March.

The revamped combat hits the spot, but if Bioware had fluffed the rest of the game then this wouldn’t mean much. Thankfully then, it’s entirely superb. Mass Effect may upset some fans, but as far as we’re concerned it’s the perfect finale. The narrative is brilliant, the action is fantastic, and the quality of art direction and aesthetic brings the universe to life like never before. But by the time you see the credits roll, though, none of this will really seem to matter. Mass Effect 3 is brave enough to threaten to destroy its very own legacy. Everything you’ve worked for is genuinely at risk, and horrifying things are going to happen because of some of the choices you’ve made. If you’ve spent as long as we have with these characters, the impact of this final journey will be one you don’t forget for years. Brave, thrilling, and incredibly emotional, Mass Effect 3 is a sci-fi masterpiece.

Any frustration that might arise from these wobbles is eradicated by an excellent autosaving checkpoint system that never leaves you retracing more than a minute or so of gameplay. Across over fifty hours of gameplay, I made less than ten manual saves. It’s that efficient.

It’s not perfect, but it certainly holds a special place in my gaming experience. I can’t think of one reason you wouldn’t go out immediately and pick this game up, unless you haven’t played a Mass Effect title before. In that instance, go and start with the first game; it’s a large commitment yes, but you’ll be glad you did when you get to experience firsthand the incredible arc the franchise will take you on. For everyone else, you have no excuse.

Despite the release of three 30-hour plus games, it feels as though there’s still so much room for growth within the Mass Effect universe – be that in RPG form or elsewhere. Here’s hoping there’s more to come because, odd as it may sound, it feels as though things are only just getting started.

Mass Effect’s brilliant story remains intact, and if you played the previous two games, the payoff’s more than satisfying. Some cover and combat issues remain unsolved, though, and the idea of participation in a completely separate multiplayer mode potentially influencing your single-player ending is mind-boggling.

The game’s dialogue still isn’t what you’d call naturalistic but the characters you meet, including the antagonists, all have distinct personalities and viewpoints. Your Shepard can be a goody two-shoes if you want them to be, but nobody else is and the game is filled with ambiguous moral decisions that range from helping someone get a refund at a shop to potential genocide.
escapistmagazine.com review
It’s still a minor irritation though, given the game’s scope and ambition. Individual elements are already done better by other games but no other title, including those by BioWare, comes close to offering such a balance of disparate gameplay elements and meaningful, enjoyable character interaction. Whether it’s the future of storytelling or not we don’t know, but it does feel very much like the future of gaming.
videogamer.com review
Mass Effect’s other ace in the hole is its willingness to up the stakes. It’s never a choice between brutally bludgeoning someone and presenting them with a bouquet of red roses; instead, these are the kind of dilemmas that have you putting the controller down, scratching your head and mulling over for minutes at a time. After all, more often than not, they’re a matter of life or death. Like a TV exec brought in to shake up an under-performing soap, no one is safe from BioWare’s scythe.
