This might not be the best game of the year, but it is certainly the best and most immersive interactive cinematic experience this reviewer has had in 25 years of gaming.

The gunplay is strong for what it is, even if the A.I. can be a mixed bag, especially the dim-witted cops that can be lost with a simple turn. The world has been captured pulling much of the essence of the ‘40s out of history books and firmly spread throughout the entire experience.

While the game world is a beautiful testament to a bygone era, the full experience just needs…more. You’re all but guaranteed to enjoy many parts of this game, but the full experience just isn’t there.

There are some intriguing gameplay concepts in Mafia II, and some of them will undoubtedly be aped by other games. Hopefully, other publishers will be able to implement them better, and make them enhance the open world experience instead of holding it back.

With a beautiful and interesting setting, a likable cast of characters, and a decent dose of action, Mafia II had the potential to add a new and exciting layer to the established myth of the American mobster.

While there’s not much to crow about here in terms of story or action, there were moments when the city and the music all gelled together that were downright transportive, and it’d be a shame to miss out on them.

Mafia II is an interesting mobster tale with some great voice acting and cool cutscenes; if you have a “made man” itch, feel free to scratch it here, but be prepared for a pretty standard third-person shooter in the gameplay department. The “take cover, kill everyone, do it again” mechanic didn’t wow me, but it didn’t let me down either.

Gameplay is king, but Mafia 2 earns itself a slightly easier ride thanks to the sumptuous visuals, which look quite wonderful even when the framerate is bogging down slightly on 360 and PS3.

Folks who love a decent mafia tale — one of family ties, betrayal, and revenge — will want to experience the world of Mafia II. Its competent game mechanics and absorbing narrative are enough to warrant a playthrough.

xboxworld.com.au review
The story is ok but nothing special. Vito is pretty lifeless and boring with the most memorable character being your best friend Joe. The voice acting is better than average but the supporting cast are rarely onscreen long enough for players to get a feel for their motives or personalities. In a genre as rich as a Mafia story you would have expected much more memorable characters. Any one episode of The Sopranos has more personality, more wit and more drama than anything found in Mafia II. Without giving anything away, the story also ends with quite a downer which summed up my feelings of the game completely.

There are a lot of great mob stories out there already, and this one needed more focus to stand out next to all the memorable tales that came before.

Mafia II gets the last word by destroying the myth that the mafia is interesting at all. It contends that the mob world is a hell of boredom populated by aggressively stupid automatons.

Though I would have liked to have seen more of Empire City and would have relished more exploration options, the story presented in Mafia II made the overall experience worthwhile. Mafia II is not a game for everyone, but it certainly fulfills expectations for its target audience.
