Mafia II suffers from some other minor annoyances as well. The game relies heavily on cutscenes, and sometimes doesn’t know when to draw the line between interacting with the world and triggering a cutscene. I shouldn’t take control of Vito as he wakes up only to jump immediately into another cutscene when I pick up the ringing phone. The NPC intelligence during missions is also troublesome. In one mission I had to tail a car to find out where it was headed, but the driver got into an accident and the mission failed.

The soundtrack is also very well implemented, allowing players to flick radio stations while driving and find a whole host of 40s and 50s ditties. The selection of tracks is remarkable and fits the tone of the game perfectly. There’s even some old favourites from the original game stashed in there.

Mafia II is an excellent return of a franchise with great promise. Vito and his associates are memorable characters in a city bursting with subtle visual details and violent undertones. The story pulls no punches, neither glorifying nor demeaning the difficult lives its protagonists lead–just presenting them with brutal honesty and letting you reach your own conclusions

It isn’t all run and cover though like some hardcore shooters. There are lot of moments that completely shift the flow of the game, from some small stealthy sections to epic car chases and then the random stuff which adds a lot of life into the world of Empire Bay. Stores can be walked into freely and held up, allowing you to steal whatever you like and then hopefully get away from the police that are likely already on the way. Killing store owners also shuts the store down later on as you progress, so though the free-roam element is not as profound or over the top as other games, it adds a level of authenticity and subtle realism that immerses you into the game world much more than you first realise. There’s a lot more to the game than just these sections we’ve mentioned, however for spoilers sake, we’re not going to talk about them as they’re certainly worth seeing for yourself (some even fairly significant to the story and offer an enormous shift in gameplay).

Small details abound – the cars use petrol, which must be replenished. Admittedly, it takes an awfully long time to drain a tank, and you’re far more likely to have written the vehicle off around half a dozen times before that occurs, but it’s a nice touch. When you do total your car (which you will, frequently) the game requires you to exit the vehicle, open the bonnet and repair the damage before continuing – difficult if you’re being pursued by the law. Additionally, you can enable a speed limiter which will prevent your car from going over the limit in any speed zone – a welcome addition when stealth is of the essence.

Turns out Joe has been busy while Vito had been fighting in the war. Short on money, Vito agrees to a small job with Joe, meets his contact within one of the local mafia families and soon everything is “taken care of”. Some calls are made and suddenly the records show that Vito’s wound was worse than was initially thought and the impending return to Europe is no longer a factor while Joe’s contacts provide a steady supply of jobs that pay a lot better than working at the docks. As with the first Mafia game, Mafia 2 is a story where the main character gets pulled into the world of organized crime and, at least for a moment, life is good.

Mafia II is 10 hours of driving, story, and extremely competent gun action. Running at top specs, it looks stunning, and if there was a soundtrack album, I’d buy myself a copy.

Still, the shooting is the biggest focus, and it works like a dream on PC. Provided your rig is up to it, Mafia II’s action experience has to be seen to be believed. Using nVidia PhysX and Apex Cloth Physics, the game turns completely average shootouts into heart-stopping scenes of mayhem

There are a lot of great mob stories out there already, and this one needed more focus to stand out next to all the memorable tales that came before.
