There is so much to Franchise Mode that it almost seems overwhelming at first. However, once you get your head in the game and get into the rhythm of looking at stats, selecting players, and getting ready for the Super Bowl, you’ll be surprised how much time you can lose. Even though Madden is a game that is undeniably fun to play with others, Franchise Mode proves that a single-player mode easily be a sports game’s greatest feature.

Shifting gears, let’s talk about the audio and commentators. The audio has been vastly improved in Madden NFL 12, as you get very rowdy and loud crowds. If your team is doing well in another team’s stadium then you’re going to get very tamed, more silent audio. If your team is getting the crap kicked out of it on every down in your opponent’s stadium then expect the crowd to continually get loud. The audio is done really well.

The same bodes for the defense; you will get yo ass burnt playing cornerback like you used to. It’s all right, though, because look at your controller, now back to the screen, now back at your controller, now back to the screen… Sadly you’ve just been dusted by Desean Jackson. Don’t worry, you’ll learn the buttons, but if you keep using that same blitz, the outcome is going to be ugly. Look down, back up, what happened? You got burnt again. What’s in your hand; not the controller? I guess you give up, but look again, I just scored, 21 skunk, anything is possible when you’re the Eagles.

Madden NFL 12 says that it has over 100 defensive AI enhancements and makes this the “smartest Madden defense ever.†I will admit that I initially struggled against this new AI but I found its flaw: curl routes. In a test, I decided to use the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the Green Bay Packers, who boast some of the better DBs in the league. Granted, I stayed away from Charles Woodson after an early interception, but with Freeman I completed 32 of my 40 passes and only had that one interception. This was with the default difficulty, as I had not touched the settings to make the game more or less difficult. After that game I adjusted the sliders a bit to give myself more of a challenge but the curl route was still a lethal tool against the AI, even on the hardest of difficulties. I don’t doubt that the AI has improved, as I said I struggled in my first few games against teams like the Bills, Cardinals, and Lions. Even coming off of a multi-week stint of playing hours of NCAA Football I had problems, but for some reason it seems as though curl routes are a big problem once again for the AI. I should note that it wasn’t the same exact play over and over, but each completion was to a curling receiver.

Past Maddens either delivered new features or fixed old problems, but this year you get neither. In too many instances Madden 12 takes you down promising paths that only lead to dead ends. Commenting on the obvious disappointments that crop up in the experience, Bertz once asked me incredulously, “Didn’t they play their own game?†I can’t remember a time when the series was this lost. I’d say that it has nowhere to go but up, but as this year shows, progress can be elusive and nothing can be counted as certain.

The good news for Madden fans is that the game is still tremendously entertaining and is a noticeable improvement over last year’s big-play-oriented score/snore-fest. Defense is once again fun to play and it feels well within your power to stop even superstar running backs and receivers. The CPU plays a much better, more varied game, and you’ll see scores in the teens and twenties more often than scores in the forties and fifties like last year.
