Killzone 3 picks up where its predecessor left off and it’s a much grander experience in terms of scale and ambition. There will be more variety, more enemy types, massive environments and a broader vision of the planet Helghan and its many terrains.

Killzone 3 is the ultimate ending to a new form of sci-fi epic. It is a story of interpersonal conflict and struggle more than two civilizations at war. By taking full advantage of the PlayStation 3 Guerrilla Games has created an expansive world and proves that even shooters can have a compelling narrative With plenty of variety to keep the action fresh throughout the entire campaign, it never feels tiresome. Killzone 3 has once again set the bar for visuals and action and should be picked up by anyone, even if you don’t think you’re a fan of shooters.

Killzone 3 is as close to perfect as online shooters get, and I do not say that lightly. The single-player could still use a little bit of work, but its faults pale in comparison to the amount of entertainment that the multiplayer provides, not to mention that the story mode itself really provides some greatness when it needs to. I don’t think the PlayStation 3 has ever had quite such a rounded, satisfactory package as this, with this level of polish, refinement and pure, simple, unpretentious action.

PS3 owners have so much to do so far in 2011, and Killzone 3 only sweetens the pot. Everyone has high expectations for the game, and boy does it go beyond what we expected. Guerrilla Games once again has delivered a top notch first-person shooter experience worthy of ample praise. It has everything we loved about Killzone 2, plus local co-op, awesome melee combat, and a terrific narrative.

Everything that worked great in the previous installment has survived, with some of the systems being tweaked. These tweaks have almost universally resulted in improvements. The campaign is a workmanlike 8-hour affair, and while that’s a bit short for some, it feels about right in practice. Plus, you can also play the campaign in split-screen co-op, which is a nice bonus. The multiplayer has the potential to be a lot of fun if people buy into it like they did with Killzone 2.

As a multiplayer game, then, Killzone 3 will rise to the top of many a PS3 owner’s collection. As a single player game it’s really good – inventive, impressive, even smart in places, but generally playing to familiar strengths: solid gunplay, but wholly linear, and rarely pushing the envelope in terms of gameplay mechanics. Although, there is that final few minutes, technically another on-rails shooter section but completely at odds with everything else you’ve played over the last eight hours – a few more of those next time, please guys.

Overall, Killzone 3 is an amazing game, but I just don’t think it has the impact that KIllzone 2 did. What was once a graphical showcase for what the PS3 can do when you push it is now just par for the course. The added variety to environments and the tweaks to the class system are great, but I think I’ll really miss the editable Warzone, and the final boss could use some work.

And now, it’s crunch time. There’s no hiding the fact that Killzone 3 is a highly-polished, exhilarating blockbuster, but it falls beyond the 9/10 threshold due to the fact that we’ve essentially played this game several times already. As a single player experience, Killzone 3 feels like a retread; a hark back to the corridor shooter days of the genre, and no matter how wide or expansive an area looks, there are always very real, very tight confines at work. However, it’s as a multiplayer experience that Killzone 3 resonates quality, which is an increasingly vital hallmark of the most memorable shooters of the day.

In some ways, Killzone 3 is a step forward. Set-piece battles will be drilled into your brain for some time after you experience them. There’s more variety in both the environments and the action, and the game is better off for this diversity. On the other hand, the excruciating story’s tendency to intrude just when the action intensifies has an adverse effect on the pacing.

At heart, KZ3 is still a ridiculously good looking thrill-fest, one which challenges little more than your reaction speed and your visual expectations. She’s not marriage material and eventually, her charms will wear thin. But we can at least almost guarantee that shooter fans won’t regret spending a fair few evenings alone in her company.

Along with its fun multiplayer, Killzone 3 is so enjoyable because it’s not just a shooter, it’s an experience. Guerilla has crafted scene after gorgeous scene that made me feel like you’re a part of a brutal, human war that is somehow fantastic in setting but also eerily reminiscent of the wars we see on TV. Combine this with the superb pacing and you have a campaign that’s totally fun despite its boring characters and uninspired story. This may not be the best game on the PS3, but it’s a fantastic option for shooter fans, and the type of title that non-PS3 owners are sure to envy.

Killzone 3 is not as big an improvement as Killzone 2 was over its predecessor, but still manages to keep up despite not being rich on content.

Killzone 3’s campaign suffers from the odd low point, but the fast pace of its excellent missions, outstanding online multiplayer, and an all-around better feel more than compensate for the missteps. This is a vast improvement over earlier franchise entries, and the superb multiplayer suite will keep us playing until the inevitable sequel.

Fans of Killzone 2 will love the improved multiplayer, but may find that the single-player side of things has lost a lot of its identity. It’s always polished and breathlessly paced, but it no longer offers a distinct change of pace from the rest of the shooter herd. Killzone 3 is a powerful, impressive game that sets an imposing standard for Sony’s 3D, Move-enabled future output; it’s just a shame that in doing so, it’s lost just a little of what made the series stand out in the first place.

He might cry out that he can’t get to you to revive you when you go down, even though he’s crouching right next to you. But apart from these rare blips, the artificial intelligence is wonderful. On the occasions when you are part of a larger battle and accompanied by numerous soldiers, your foes are just as focused on your comrades as they are on you. As a result, you feel like a proud cog in an authentic war machine, rather than a simple bullet magnet

For the time being, I can only judge the single-player experience. As a technical showcase, Killzone 3’s campaign is a marvel; as a six-hour slice of interactive entertainment, it’s a definite disappointment. While the graphics may well be the most impressive we’ve ever seen, the impact of their detail eventually wears off – and once that happens you’re left with a competent but overly linear shooter, with superficial set-pieces and a plot that’s impossible to care about.

Multiplayer and the new, AI-populated Botzone let a different brand of gunplay take centre stage, with a range of Team Fortress 2-style character classes and an extensive collection of character-customising bells and whistles adding a layer of tactical nuance (see ‘Black ops’). Naturally, it’s time spent in these modes that will hold the key to the game’s long-term appeal.

The feature set of Killzone 3 is impressive: 3D support, PlayStation Move compatibility, split-screen offline co-op campaign, and offline multiplayer with bots, but no amount of 3D waggle can change the fact that the Killzone 3 campaign is a miserable experience. Killzone 3 certainly offers more bells and whistles than its predecessor — it’s just a shame they’ve been affixed to an inferior game.

It does have a few exhilarating moments, and it can probably still just about claim to have the best graphics ever, but it fundamentally plays more like a formulaic Call Of Duty clone than a successor to the current generations most intense, visceral FPS. The silver lining is that, if the beta was anything to go by, then Killzone 3’s multiplayer should be excellent and the single-player campaign’s shallowness and brevity – just four-and-a-half hours of game time for us – is an indication that, again following Call Of Duty’s lead, online play was the main area of development focus this time.
