With the original Kane & Lynch not doing so well, this one is inpired by documentary films and user-generated content. Every aspect of the game has been designed to deliver a fresh perspective to the words intensity and content.

Two extra variant multiplayer modes also join the fray – Undercover Cop plays the same, except that one of the group is secretly a policemen, and working out who they are before they take your whole team out is essential. Cops and Robbers puts players in the role of both the good and the bad guys, meaning the robbers have even more problems to contend with. Throw in rankings, then top it off with loyalty and style scores and you’ve got yourself a great online experience.

After years since the last Hitman game, many fans of IO Interactive are hopeful that the lackluster release of Kane & Lynch 2 gets them back on track of their best franchise. I can’t say I disagree; while this game serves up some very unique and gritty visuals, the story and action just don’t come together like they should. If we’re going to get a third game, it’s going to need to be a hell of a lot better than this to get people behind it.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is one of the most visually unique titles I’ve ever played, glossing over a fairly by the numbers third-person shooter. The deranged duo’s return is worth experiencing and is far more accomplished than its predecessor, but the gameplay on offer still doesn’t match the quality of the characters IO has created.

A recommendation for Dog Days isn’t hard, though it is filled with qualifications. If the story and characters haven’t caught your interest yet, or if you’re just not interested in crime thrillers, then there’s probably not going to be enough in Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days to keep you playing. Outside of the story it tells, how it tells it, and the interesting conceit of its multiplayer modes, Dog Days is just a passable third person shooter. But if you appreciated the promise of the last game, or you’re looking for something darker and more sophisticated content-wise than your usual shooter fare, then Kane & Lynch 2 is just the thing.

After running Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days through its paces, I wanted to love the game. In some ways, the franchise seems greatly misunderstood. Dog Days has more in common with Left 4 Dead than a typical action adventure, and the multiplayer modes are definitely something different. The story mode co-op (both online and off) is another appreciated addition, though some of the matchmaking options are a tad archaic. Though Dog Days wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, I enjoyed its arcade approach. Unfortunately, the design and breadth of content don’t come close to justifying the price. Had this been a $15 game folks could download from PSN or XBLA, it would be much easier to recommend.

There’s one sequence in particular which deserves comment. After escaping a gruesome torture scene, Lynch and Kane run through the streets of Shanghai naked and covered with open wounds. In the rain. The ludicrousness of that scenario destroys any claim of realism that the game might have made. The firefight through the mall occurs because the pair of naked bleeding men are looking for clothes which I personally would have taken from the first guy I killed. But hey, I’m no gangster.

The overall feeling of blandness still saturates the gameplay despite how much the art direction tries to spice things up, and it’s a burden that the game never truly shakes. The multiplayer certainly gives it the best shot the game has, but is hamstrung by equally shallow map selection and player count. The second half of the rather short campaign is where the single player of the game begins to improve, but it never quite reaches any yardstick above that of being merely passable. Though the game really doesn’t have many outright flaws to speak of, Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days really doesn’t have anything to really latch on to either.
