At this point, gamers fully expect movie tie-in games to be mediocre at best. Iron Man 2 is a good example of this, though it isn’t as cookie-“cutter “as many other movie games. Despite some control issues, poor melee combat, and a somewhat unfriendly camera, fighting off the various helicopters, soldiers, and mechs that the game throws at you is surprisingly satisfying, and the allure of unlocking new armors (including comic armors) will keep Iron Man fans plowing through the 5-6 hour adventure, despite its many flaws. Were this a non-licensed product, it would be a below-average action title with little to recommend. The fact that it stars a popular super hero definitely helps, as does the passable plot and enjoyable script, making Iron Man 2 a title that’s just barely worth playing.

I have to admit though, the various unlockable Iron Man suits are a nice touch, any of which you can choose at the start of each mission, but this was the only component I found myself changing between each mission. Visually, the game fails to stun with plenty of pop-in and poor character design, especially Nick Fury. Don’t expect to be visually stimulated over the course of the game, as the game will usually do the opposite. There were a lot of things I disliked about Iron Man 2, but as I stated earlier Iron Man 2 is a step in the right direction for movie tie-ins. It’s far from unplayable; it’s just not a polished game whatsoever. The trip is fairly boring as you take the same actions over and over usually consisting of blowing up a generic enemy with a few halfway decent boss fights sprinkled throughout. The game fails to impress for the most part, but its one glowing achievement is the fact that I could play through it and didn’t ever really find myself hating my time with it. I just really didn’t enjoy my time with it either. I wouldn’t really recommend the game to anyone other than super diehard fans of the Iron Man universe, since most of you have better things/games to do/play. However, I do think that you should keep an eye out when Iron Man 3 comes around, it might actually be an enjoyable experience if the formula is tightened once more

Superhero games are supposed to be power fantasies. So far, the Iron Man games haven’t done much to inspire my dreams, but at least they’re not giving me nightmares anymore. If Sega keeps tweaking the formula, next time it might actually convince me that it’s fun being Iron Man.

To wrap up, the game’s decent voiceovers and good looking character visuals don’t over power the fact that the game is too repetitive. The missions become very mundane as quickly as mission three, which isn’t a good sign. If you enjoyed the movie, the game may potentially be worth a wait, but as with most movie game tie-ins, the game just isn’t up to scratch and will no doubt be found in the bargain-bin in a shop near you soon

At this point most gamers have blown up enough silos and downed enough choppers to know what an explosion should look and feel like. Iron Man 2 captures this, and it’s a good thing, because there are so many explosions it almost borders on a Michael Bay film. What Iron Man 2 most certainly does not seem to grasp is the weight of the character or his surroundings. I mean, sure a tank might be able to survive a couple of laser blasts, but why is that darn tree so strong? More than once I came across a metal cargo door that took four or five missiles to crack open, then destroyed a mechanical enemy with a few punches. I’m no physicist, but something about that seems odd. There’s no power to your character. You can fly full speed into a chain link fence and it will slowly tip over like it was hit by a strong gust. People criticize sandbox games where your character feels too powerful; this one has the opposite problem. Apparently, Iron man lives in a in an adamantium world

To wrap things up, I have a few questions for you. Are you the hardest of the hard core Iron Man fans? Do you have more money and time than you know what to do with (if so, feel free to send me some)? Do you have a compulsion to buy every video game ever made? Did you play the first Iron Man movie based game and think to yourself “this game was fantastic”? If you answered yes to any of these questions then Iron Man 2 may be for you. For the rest of you, don’t buy this game until it reaches the sub ten dollar price point or you are going to be very angry with yourself.

As for casual fans that want to pick Iron Man 2 up because they saw the movie and thought it was so rad that they had to run to the nearest retailer, there’s not much here for them either. I made progress through the game’s broken aiming system and glitchiness by the skin of my teeth and can only imagine how frustrated someone unaccustomed to games would become after Iron Man or War Machine (you can choose to play as either in most missions) got stuck on a wall and summarily killed for the 20th time in a row
