After being inundated with sequels and giant franchises for the past several months, it’s refreshing to come across a game like Ilomilo. It’s an ingenious puzzle game that’s sure to challenge and please every type of gamer and comes highly recommended from this author.

there’s no reason not to pick up ilomilo unless you just totally detest puzzle games. Between the many different brain-bending puzzles and the fantastic universe that’s equal parts Baron Munchausen (the 1988 Terry Gilliam film) and Grimm Fairy Tales, it’s certainly the best investment you can make in the genre.

This can involve distracting a monster with Ilo while Milo slips by, or having Milo activate a button that will carry the cube Ilo is on across a chasm. One major weakness is that the camera angles don’t always let you see both characters at once, which makes it even harder to figure out the complex set of actions they must take to be together. Because the characters often exist on different planes of the 3-D landscape, it’s easy to get the two tantalizingly close, able to pass each other cubes to use, but unable to have the joyous reunion that means victory. The difficulty can get high, so it’s nice that you don’t need to beat every board to proceed to the next level.

Despite being very complex, ilomilo is rarely intimidating. As long as you’re patient (some levels took me over an hour to complete, others took 5 minutes) and think how best to use the limited tools at your disposal, chances are you’ll work out an effective strategy.

There’s just one small caveat at present: should you have ‘helper bubbles’ turned on in the game’s settings, it has a tendency to freeze. In completing 32 of 36 stages and eight bonus levels, the game came crashing to a sudden halt on 10 occasions. This did tend to happen whenever I attempted something particularly stupid (like trying to pick up a Muncher; in my defence it was the first time I’d seen one) but it can also happen if you tap the A button to collect an elevator cube before it’s come to a complete stop, for example. In a game where levels often take 15 minutes to complete, a freeze close to the end can be inordinately frustrating. As long as you ensure the bubbles are switched off in the settings – which they are by default – then you shouldn’t suffer any freezes, although Southend is currently beavering away on a patch to resolve this minor issue.

XBLA has been getting incredible games lately and Ilomilo is a shining example of how well a game can grow out of a simple idea. Gameplay is laughingly simple at first, but this quickly turns out to be the opposite by the time you reach the fourth world and the day/night blocks start showing up.

lomilo has a soft-edged look to it that makes me certain that the game’s developers have spent a lot of time with the PS3’s Little Big Planet. The game tries to add a cutesy storyline to the game along with odd characters evidently meant to be humorous and endearing, but it misses the mark here. Not that that’s a big knock against the game, though. Puzzle games don’t really need storylines and they can be safely ignored without consequence

The allure continues throughout the loading screens, menus and levels that are all presented perfectly. If there was a Kirby game where everything turned into fluffy, cuddly toys that wanted to play in parks all day, this is what it’d be like. It really stands out and grabs your attention – every character and piece of scenery looks like it was hand-stitched and filled with wool. The music is fantastic, too. From playing along to the theme in the main menu to the out of tune Oomph bands; you’ll have the little tunes stuck in your head for days. This is hyper-cute. It is charm turned up to 110%. You have been warned.

If Little Big Planet and Katamari Damacy had a gaming love child, put it up for adoption and was brought up under the supervision of Willy Wonka; that would accurate depict the visual styling of ilomilo. The cute, 3-dimensional puzzles are typically entrenched in a giant world of fuzzy characters and dreamlike, whimsical environments. The game is extremely colorful, but in a muted style that isn’t overbearing in the slightest. In addition, the world is always moving and requires your constant supervision to make sure that everything is rotating correctly and going to plan. The game runs smoothly on the Xbox 360 and will charm the pants off even the most anti-video game Grinch.

At 800 Microsoft Points ilomilo is ludicrously good value for money. A relatively short game but in between the dozens of collectibles, from vinyl records that unlock concept art and music to creatures hidden around each level that give you bonus stages, it’s an impressively in-depth and polished XBLA game.

Ilomilo is a puzzle game in which you must bring two patchwork dumplings together over a variety of complex arenas. The stages play out over maps of segmented blocks, with Ilo and Milo starting in different areas. Your goal is to switch between both characters, taking control of them to move blocks, press switches, and ultimately reunite.

ilomilo is a challenging game disguised in an adorably harmless costume. If you’re a fan of visual logic puzzles, definitely check it out. Not only will your brain get a workout, but the slightly-out-of-tune-elementary-school-band soundtrack is a delight and the whole package has a sense of humor that will have you grinning. The lazy cooperative mode is a disappointment but there is still plenty of content to get lost in here for a few days. It’s nice to take a break from shooting people in games and instead help two friends get together.

The game isn’t without its problems though. For starters the perspective of the camera at times can be more of a hindrance than the difficulty of the puzzles themselves. You will find yourself missing solutions because of a poor angle or simply not thinking fourth dimensionally. The trial and error also starts to grate on your nerves after a few tries. Probably one of the biggest challenges though is that the game ramps up the difficulty towards the end to near hair-pulling levels. Anyone who completes the game definitely has something to brag about, but you might end up snapping a controller in the process.

Case in point: ilomilo. Developed by some rather crafty (and clearly young-at-heart) Swedes over at SouthEnd Interactive, the seemingly simple puzzler has more than just whimsy and cuteness to spare. In actuality, the tale of ilo and milo, best friends that meet up regularly for snacks in the park only to find every day the path is different, is far more diabolical than one would think given the first few minutes of the game.
