Halo 4 will be faster paced in contrast to previous titles, and is described as “more visceral and intense” while retaining the Halo flavor.

Safe to say, I found very little of Halo 4 to be disappointing, and think that 343 Industries has done a fantastic job with taking over the reins from series creator Bungie. Halo 4 is a fantastic, open first person shooter worthy of the franchise, and something that both longtime fans, and newcomers, will definitely enjoy. Despite some mildly baffling changes to multiplayer matchmaking, this marks an excellent entry in the series, and something that fans won’t want to miss come November 6th.

But that doesn’t mean Halo 4 is only for the hardcore fan. If you’re new to the series or you simply have a passing interest, I implore you to give this game a look. Unless Black Ops II or Far Cry 3 manage to revolutionize the genre in astronomical ways, Halo 4 is the clear frontrunner for best first-person shooter of 2012. Heck, it may very well be the best game you play all year.

None of these things, however, impact the experience in any significant way; none of them take the gloss off what is a truly spectacular game. Of all of the possible results that may have sprung from the circumstances that now surround the development of the Halo franchise, Halo 4 is the most welcome (and surprising) imaginable.

Are there issues? Sure. Like any game I have minor grievances, but nothing so glaring that it takes away from my positive experience. But the overall question persists: do we need another Halo trilogy? The answer to that is a surprising no, for you, the general public that’s looking for nothing more than a minor multiplayer distraction. But from one dedicated Halo fan to those looking for an evolution in story, creation, and online play, yes, we freakin’ do. It feels good to finally say after many years that Halo is back.

Halo 4 is Halo – a surprisingly successful, mandatory step for 343 Industries. But the game strives for more than competence, giving it a forceful march and a decadent show of strength. Our doubt and questioning of Halo’s continued existence has, in some small way, helped deliver one of the best games in the series and one of the finest shooters in years. Of course, if we want to use this tactic for the next one we’d better start now.

At its core, everything still feels like a Halo game. While there are new some new elements that change the gameplay a little, that weight of playing as a super soldier is well balanced between the sense of speed and strength in the multiplayer. 343 Industries have done a remarkable job at continuing the Halo legacy. They’ve gone all out, creating a fantastic sequel that brought forth a major focus on storytelling while upping the visual and audio direction to a level that will be tough for anyone to rival with these few remaining years of the current console generation.

After soaking in the new game, I am beyond thrilled to be so in love with Halo again, more than I’ve been since Halo 2. Halo 4 is a masterstroke everyone can and should celebrate, and its two guaranteed sequels instantly make the next-generation Xbox a must-own system, with Halo 5 its most anticipated title. Halo has been rebuilt. It has been redefined. And it has been reinvigorated. The Xbox’s original king has returned to his rightful place on the throne.

Halo 4 represents a new beginning for the fan-favorite series, and 343 Industries has crafted a very polished experience. The core multiplayer experience breaks no new ground and borrows from others a bit, and Spartan Ops is more evolutionary than revolutionary, but these are minor quibbles and they make a great addition to the game. By far their greatest success lies in a more nuanced realization of the series’ main protagonist, Master Chief, and while the campaign works exceptionally well as a stand-alone narrative, it leaves our hero in a place that opens the story to exciting new possibilities in the next two installments.

You’ll need that, since enemies are more aggressive than they have been. Halo 4 continues the series’ tradition of smart, ruthless AI, even on Normal difficulty. If you’re not paying attention, you just might get flanked by that unassuming grunt you left alive before taking cover. It’s often in your best interest to catch enemies unaware, inflict maximum violence quickly, then fall back to reassess the situation. How much you can do and how hard you push depends on the difficulty you choose to play on.

Of course, graphics and story take you only so far — in a game like Halo, what’s really important is how it all feels. Thankfully, series diehards will find little to raise an eyebrow over. 343 managed to keep the familiarity of firing on a horde of Covenant goons with a scoped-in DMR a treat, while mixing in the new tactics of dealing with Promethean horrors like intimidating Knights or swarming Crawlers with a new arsenal of Forerunner-type weaponry. These new enemies aren’t easy to beat, especially when they’re coming at you en masse.

Halo 4 is a game that has been a long time coming, and with a new developer in control many were worried. I can honestly say that these worries should be tossed aside. This latest entry into the world of the Halo universe offers up solid visuals, great sound, and some very addictive gameplay, both offline and online. The narrative that is put forth is simply amazing as it provides a new beginning with the Reclaimer Saga and the addition of the new Spartan Ops mode is simply brilliant as it adds even more story to an already great tale. Sure, some may complain the familiarity of the gameplay is a bad thing, but in the end, even though you do get a recognizable feeling when playing, the overall experience that Halo 4 provides is very enjoyable and one that you should not miss. Welcome back Master Chief, the wait has been far too long.

Whether I am watching a grenade explode a Promethean into a shower of sparks or charging with friends at my side through a cooperative adventure, Halo 4 makes the series feel new again. 343 Industries’ clear affection for the property shines through, leaving me thrilled to join Master Chief for another decade in defense of the galaxy.

At the end of the day, Halo 4 stands as a particularly polished piece of fan fiction that not only deserves to be released, it carves its own way in an established universe, carefully paying homage to the tropes of what has come before, while boldly establishing its own mythology and gameplay lore.

The proprietary engine powering it all leaves those of rival games for dust, including DICE’s grubbily good-looking Battlefield 3. The lighting system in particular is a triumph, adroitly mingling natural light with the fizzling greens, whites and purples of energy bolts. Characters, weapons and vehicles, meanwhile, are so heavy with detail they look positively corroded. It’s here that Microsoft’s monstrous franchise investment is most apparent, and the results leave us not so much curious about as frankly terrified by the thought of what 343 can achieve on the next generation Xbox.

From the moment I saw Master Chief put himself back to sleep at the end of Halo 3, all I could think about was how his next adventure–if he would even have a next adventure–should be something dramatically different from the adventures we had already seen. Moving him out into the middle of nowhere and cutting him off from his allies is an idea with huge potential. So that’s why I find the storytelling side of Halo 4 to be fairly disappointing. Within the first few hours you’ve fought enemies that go all the way back to the first game in the franchise and you’ve reconnected with the human race. That’s not to say that the entire story is a bust–and it does set up some potentially interesting things for the next couple of games to address–but it’s good that the developers have backed this story up with sharp, time-tested gameplay that gets enhanced in meaningful ways across all modes.

They can rest easy. Halo 4 is authentic, and assures 343’s role is more than a mere tribute act. Their delicate yet sprawling work may be more continuation than true expansion – and perhaps the true test comes in the next step – but for now, Halo returns with a bang, not a whimper.
