The writing is sharp as a tack and made this reviewer laugh out loud on several occasions, but as always when you’re cutting this close to the bone there’s little room for manoeuvre, and when the standard slips for a moment towards the infantile and puerile, the cheap laughs provide unwelcome ammo for opinionated outsiders who would deem this game indefensible.

There is so much else here I could talk about. I could go into intricate details about some of the incredible things I’ve seen and done in Los Santos so far. I could gush over the characters, the setting, or the story for another 1500 words. I could even launch into some hyperbole filled discussion of GTA V’s place in the pantheon of gaming history. I could do all of those things, but I’d rather just say that GTA V is as close to a perfection of the Grand Theft Auto formula as has been created thus far. If you have any interest at all, it should already be installing on your system.

Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most expansive and impressive games I’ve ever played. Maybe you’ll hate its protagonists, but they each illicit challenging emotions, laughter, and excitement. The San Andreas state benefits from impressive lighting, modeling, and believable population levels, especially given how incredibly frustrating it would be to drive so aggressively in L.A. traffic. (That doesn’t stop Rockstar from throwing speed freaks a rush hour wall every so often.

GTA V is clearly pushing the absolute limits of the Xbox 360 and we aren’t just talking about the boosted draw distance or stupidly detailed graphics. It’s exhilarating to witness a random crime or happenstance, the citizens of this world are no better than the three protagonists in many ways, it seems everybody is out to revel in the insanity of a Rockstar world. While some areas aren’t quite as bustling as those of Liberty City, make no mistake, GTA V improves on its predecessor in almost every conceivable way.

The sun sets as an emotionally strung-out Michael drives down this game’s rendition of Sunset Boulevard. He flicks the station and the sax riff of Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street — an impossibly appropriate tune for this character at this time — blares through the speakers. His troubles melt away. Now he’s ignoring the wiles of Los Santos, turning right onto the Pacific Coast highway, into fifth gear, and up into Blaine County. Nirvana

The legacy of the franchise is such that almost everyone who plays this will have some history with the universe, and Rockstar capitalise on that right from the off. Make no mistake: this game is beyond heavyweight. In many ways, Grand Theft Auto V is a culmination of the current generation; it’s a summation of everything we’ve seen in the last eight years, a love letter, if you like, to the 360 and the PS3. Who knows if a next-gen edition will follow, but as it stands this is the perfect swan-song for this console generation.

Grand Theft Auto V is still an extraordinary technical achievement and a fabulous piece of entertainment. I’m not sure every aspect is an unqualified success, and its violent bitterness can be a little wearying, but this is a bold and scintillating full-stop to an explosive generation of video games. It dares the rest of the blockbuster industry to try and match its scope and, even with new consoles on the horizon, it may be some time before anything steps up.

And then GTA V is also a monstrous parody of modern life – our bubbling cesspit of celebrity fixation, political apathy and morose self-obsession. I half expected it to end with the Houser brothers dressed as Papa Lazarou from League of Gentlemen staring into the camera and whispering seductively, "you all live in Los Santos now". But they don’t need to, of course. This misanthropic masterpiece says it all for them.

Grand Theft Auto V is Rockstar’s definitive open-world masterpiece, a magnum opus and the culmination of everything Rockstar has created to date. Almost entirely flawless, GTA V is the perfect marriage of story and unhindered freedom to explore, with the promise of hidden secrets scattered across the deserts, hills and wilderness of Blaine County. Boasting planes, trains, automobiles, helicopters, motorcycles, bicycles, parachutes, boats, submarines and a multitude of guns, Grand Theft Auto V is all things to all gamers. It’s quite simply perfect in every way.

Five years ago, it looked as though it would’ve been difficult to make a bigger, more impressive game than Grand Theft Auto IV, but Rockstar didn’t just settle for improvements to visuals. Instead, it polished and iterated upon every single element of the game–and the genre. The world is massive and detailed, the gameplay is damn near perfect, and though there are some lackluster side missions, the actual story is filled with memorable personalities that feel more fully-realized than even the best of GTA’s previous characters. It’s a remarkable example of open-world gaming at it’s finest, and while it doesn’t reinvent the genre or do anything all that new, it does so much so well that it’s hard to find flaws in Rockstar’s massive blockbuster.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is an ambitious game, attempting to meld three very different characters together to tell one encompassing story of survival in what amounts to the worst place in America. That story stumbles, but the open-ended gameplay remains a showpiece for the vast amount of content that can be poured into a virtual world.

Grand Theft Auto V is both a reflective and deflective game, diving into the heart of the GTA series with more than a few subtle things to say about itself. Michael is tired, and old, and wants to change, but he can’t, and eventually he grows to accept and even enjoy that. Franklin is smarter than his surroundings, dreaming big but held back by old fashioned ideas. Trevor is hilarious, surprising, and a disgusting degenerate. All three characters, in their respective ways, feel representative of the Grand Theft Auto series as a whole, and contribute to making GTA V what it is — the ultimate culmination of Rockstar’s beloved and despised series. Personally, I think that’s a fine thing to be.

Driving is forgiving, and your inevitable crashes have a low chance of tossing you through the windshield or flipping over your car permanently. Not only can you nab the fastest or best-handling car on the road for a more pleasurable ride, but you also level up each character’s driving skill as you play. Franklin starts out as the most expert driver, and he has a special ability that slows down time for a short period to allow you to navigate around corners and between cars. Using the ability to win races and escape cops is very fun, and the RPG-lite mechanics of leveling provide some structure to the experience.
