Front Mission Evolved breaks the mold of the franchise, delivering the action-packed experience of a third-person shooter within the distinct aesthetic of the Front Mission universe. Set in a world full of destruction, conspiracy and crumbling alliances, players will take on the role of Dylan Ramsey to face enemy armies while in control of a giant, customizable, bipedal tank known as a wanzer. Every wanzer is outfitted with extreme firepower, and players must fight through critical battles across a world on the brink of total war. As they make their way through metropolises such as New York City over 150 years in the future, Front Mission Evolved will embed players in heart-pounding, large-scale action unlike anything they’ve ever seen before.

gameinformer.com review
Front Mission Evolved offers four multiplayer modes that are average at best: deathmatch, team deathmatch, domination (take control of turrets), and supremacy (claim capture points). While chasing and destroying live opponents might be fun on launch day, the modes are not compelling enough to compete with other multiplayer offerings out there.

When all is said and done, Front Mission Evolved is an enjoyable, albeit flawed, turn for the Japanese series. Double Helix accomplishes a lot in appealing to Western gamers while still sticking to the themes Front Mission has established through its 15-year history.

Once you’re done with the 8-10 hour story mode, you can take what you’ve learned into the multiplayer world in four different game types. On tap is your standard Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch and two other team-based modes – Domination and Supremacy – which both have similar King of the Hill objectives. All four modes are fairly standard and don’t really stand-out, but are serviceable for those looking for more action. As well as being able to customize your Wanzers in the campaign, the same options are available online. You won’t be able to carry over your collection but there are still tons of items for you to grab and tweak.

As it stands, Front Mission Evolved is a decent entry in the series. The use of wanzers is still appealing since we haven't been inundated with too many games using them, and the multiplayer component is quite strong. The controls are good, and while the sound and graphics could have been stronger, they hold their own. The campaign mode and weak story drag down the game.

If you’re a fan of mech combat, and customization, Front Mission Evolved is definitely one you should look into. Its most redeeming quality is its storytelling. The story itself is nothing particularly special, but it’s the characters, and most of the dialogue makes for worthwhile rewards for completing the levels. The combat itself could benefit from a burst of speed, and the on-foot sequences aren’t bad, but they also aren’t that great. Front Mission Evolved is going to disappear before anyone even notices that it was around, but if you like mechs, it’s probably one you should pause to check it out. It won’t blow your mind, but you won’t hate it either

These problems aside, there is a genuinely good time to be had with portions of Front Mission Evolved, provided you bring with you a certain love for mechs. It’s probably not the high point of the series, but fans of the Front Mission universe and/or giant robots might find something to like here.

Front Mission Evolved is an enjoyable third person action title. I can see that some people are going to have issues with it, especially if you liked the formula from previous entries in the series. I enjoyed the new approach though and had fun going through this title. It’s not an exceptionally long title and it is probably one that you can beat within a day or two. I question the replayability of this title, especially given the fact that I couldn’t connect to a multiplayer game. Overall I enjoyed my time with the title though and I urge people to give it a chance. Even if you haven’t enjoyed mech games in the past, you should still check this one out. It might just surprise you.

If you do not feel too burned for Square’s new direction for this installment of Front Mission and you are dying to for a new mech game, than you cannot go wrong with Evolved. Even if you are not a mech head and can tolerate some of the game’s technical issues, I would recommend giving Front Mission Evolved a shot as it is a breath of fresh air from the plethora of military shooters that dominate the market.

Overall Front Mission Evolved is an enjoyable entry in to the series that takes on a new direction. Veteran action fans might want to skip this title if they are looking for a story to rope them in. There are reasons for taking the ride offered by Front Mission Evolved including colorful environments and pretty explosions.

In the end Front Mission Evolved isn’t bad so much as unremarkable. It’s functional, has entertaining combat and sports a surprisingly robust customization system. Unfortunately it winds up falling short on a lot of potential.

At its core, Front mission Evolved is a run-of-the-mill action shooter that wastes the opportunities its got in giant robot combat. The game only occasionally frustrates, but never really wows the player, either. If you have to scratch the giant robot itch, try the far superior Super Robot Taisen series of the Japanese-only Choushojuu Mecha MG on the DS. Those are mech games done right; Front Mission Evolved never comes close.

Two groups of people are of key interest when it comes to Front Mission Evolved: mech fans and Front Mission fans. Mech fans are a finicky bunch and know the genre inside out. I doubt Evolved will be considered as anything better than average by this group; as I’ve mentioned previously, Armored Core does the whole shebang a whole lot better. It’s likely that Front Mission fans will be equally as disappointed. With the strategising gone, all that’s left is a poor narrative and mediocre shooting. Only the most ardent franchise lovers are going to defend Evolved – they would have much preferred another SRPG. Ultimately, Front Mission Evolved is another case of needless westernisation, something that Square Enix is becoming increasingly guilty of.

There are emblems to collect in the story and ranks to crawl through in multiplayer, but Front Mission Evolved just feels like a flat experience. The big ol’ mechs are here if you have a hankering to boost around and smash stuff, but it’s nothing revolutionary and doesn’t feel like a full-fledged game at times with its less-than-stellar story and matches that limp on.

Front Mission Evolved can sit well with mech game fans especially with its multiplayer. However as a third-person action shooter not very much stands out unless you quite enjoy boss battles with lots and lots of strafing, reloading, repairing and firing volley after volley of missiles, rockets and bullets.

Front Mission Evolved isn’t a step forward for the Front Mission series. Double Helix Games is treading water here with a very beige third-person shooter that doesn’t do anything particularly well aside from explosions. Try it only if you’re a huge devotee of the old series or are a big fan of blowing things up real good.

Even as someone who’s merely dabbled in the Front Mission franchise, I’d like nothing more than to see the series make a return to form on this generation of consoles. Unfortunately, it looks like Evolved may bury what’s left of this giant robot legacy. Double Helix obviously had good intentions, but, as a whole, Front Mission Evolved is completely unnecessary.

One look at the game in motion and it’s painfully obvious that Front Mission Evolved couldn’t be more outdated if it tried. The textures are atrocious and loading screens will test the patience of the most stalwart gamers. It ultimately asks: “How long are you willing wade through the garbage to hopefully stumble upon a gem?†The answer to the question doesn’t matter since it serves as a ploy. The truth of the matter is that there’s not a single redeeming factor to Front Mission Evolved.

Overall, I didn’t care for Front Mission Evolved, and there are far better shooters out there this year to take up your time. I like giant robots, I even like shooting giant robots, but Front Mission doesn’t do much other than deliver that concept. The single player is uninspired, does nothing to build upon the franchise it’s based off of, and the multiplayer isn’t particularly fun unless you’re willing to devote an inordinate amount of time to getting equipment that will make you a viable threat. I’d go ahead and say you could definitely avoid this one; it’s not something I’d suggest to shooter or mech fans in general.
