More important than all the above is the fact that Football Manager 2011 is a huge time sink that will keep you playing for hours on end for months to come. There has often been an argument for add-ons to the previous year’s version, simply fixing a few things and updating stats, but this year Sports Interactive has made a game that feels like the most essential for a very long time. Being a manager has never been so realistic or as much fun.

None of these issues are ruinous though and this is still both the best football management game available and a genuine, if very small, improvement on the previous version. The problem isn’t that the changes aren’t welcome or useful but that they don’t justify shelling out another £40 to experience.

there’s still nothing quite like it. I’ve just spent the best part of two hours trying to find part-time overseas players willing to join my nascent Vauxhall Motors team, and getting them promoted was probably more satisfying than ever thanks to the level of difficulty now on offer. It goes without saying that, yet again, Sports Interactive has released the best football management sim ever. It’s just very hard work at times.

Luckily there are a couple of fairly ingenious new additions to be found in Football Manager 2011 that help atone for its oversights. One favourite is the new way of negotiating contracts; as recent events at Manchester United have shown, getting big name players to sign on the dotted line can be more difficult than teaching Joe Cole how to do long division.
