FIFA 14 may seem like the same old song and dance on the surface, but once you get into the game you’ll appreciate what the developer has done to enhance the overall quality, even if the glitz and glamour suffers a bit by not advancing along the same path as the improved controls. FIFA 14 isn’t going to blow fans away with new and innovative modes and visuals, but what you do get is a solid experience that now, thanks to a simplified control scheme, makes the game more exciting to play while remaining true to the realism that has made this series a fan favorite for the last 10 years.

FIFA 14’s a great game–of course it is–but the series seems too big and bloated now to make any substantial changes. FIFA 14 requires more patience than most of its predecessors, and even when your patience is rewarded, it often feels like it’s flattering to deceive. Despite the improvements in graphical fidelity and presentation, which are sure to be even more amazing on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, FIFA 14 is essentially the same game from last year. EA Sports continues to set the bar for soccer titles, but Pro Evolution Soccer 14 has been doing its fair share of improvements. In fact, I believe a real feud is sure to break out. It’s going to be like the old WWF vs. WCW ratings battles back in the 90’s. That’s the kind of competition this genre sorely needs.

FIFA 14 is a solid game, and the changes to FIFA Ultimate Team certainly improve that aspect, but I have too many issues with other elements of it to wholeheartedly recommend it. The Xbox One version seems to be a lot more fluid — physical interactions between players seem tempered and the way your team-mate AI moves to open up options for you is significantly better. Still, I think EA needs to go back to the drawing board on its interpretation of unpredictability’s role in sports games, because while it might make the game look more realistic to watch, it makes it feel frustrating to play.
