theguardian.com review
If this is your first Fifa game on the new gen consoles then you will be blown away by all the little details that together contribute to an overall experience not too dissimilar to watching football on live television. If you owned Fifa 14 on Xbox One or PS3, Fifa 15 is still a significant upgrade, though maybe not the revolutionary product that it was built up to be. It’s a baby step rather than a leap towards perfection. Fifa 15 is still not entirely flawless, but then who cares when it’s already the new best football simulation ever?

The FIFA franchise has gone from a game that was huge because of the de facto effect of its numerous licenses to a title that stands tall thanks to its own abilities. FIFA 15 takes the series into a whole other level with gameplay that betters the surmounting hype that threatened to engulf it. Playing it makes me believe I can do just about anything with the ball at my feet, and this self-assurance is powerful. If you have the desire, FIFA 15 meets the challenge. It does not disappoint.

EA have struck pure gold with Fifa 15, the series is back where it needs to be following the few setbacks of Fifa 14, and this year’s additions have taken it to a whole new level. The improved Premier League experience and commentary gives the player a real sense of purpose and occasion as they soak up the atmosphere from the fans, and then the teams take to the pitch where Fifa 15’s new dribbling system can be enjoyed to its fullest. We hope that EA brings a little customisation to the new tactics and an improved defence system with next year’s iteration, but these are only minor flaws in what is an utterly fantastic game. If you like Football, you must play Fifa 15.

FIFA 15 on next-gen consoles, including the Xbox One on which I played it, benefits from the evolution of the Ignite engine, which manages to deliver impressive graphics and fluid gameplay, and the developers have spent a lot of resources to make the overall presentation as close as possible to that of a television broadcast.

We’ve covered a lot over the course of this review. I see almost every change that has been made as a positive one with just some minor problems with the AI, primarily for goalkeepers. The presentation is magnificent and is truly a pleasure to enjoy while locked into a long session. Even with as much as I’ve talked about, I still feel as though I’ve only scratched the surface on how deep this year’s version is. For all of the negative talk that some gamers give to yearly sports titles that end up being “roster updates,†FIFA has always seemed to keep things fresh and offer plenty of changes. This year is no different, but it feels better than past seasons because the next generation has truly been utilized. The stadiums are gorgeous, player movements are more accurate, and the difficulty has been ramped up to offer a better challenge. There are game modes for everyone to enjoy, no matter their fancy. This is a definitive upgrade from the launch title of last year, and is one to be appreciated.

FIFA 15 actually represents a bit of a crossroads for the franchise. It’s a series that’s been at the top of its game for so long, but with so much innovation over the last five or so years, and for so long, the question is how long can they keep it up? And perhaps, more importantly, how can you truly innovate with a sport that has such a limited scope for innovation? The simple answer is you can’t; you’ll eventually run out of ideas. FIFA 15 is an argument against the annualisation of sports games, and with little-to-no innovation and a few backwards steps, FIFA 15 seems to be languishing just outside the European qualification places. A decent iteration, yes, but I guess you could say it’s a sideways, heck, even backwards movement for the franchise, leaving the door wide open for PES.

FIFA 15 has gameplay problems, but it can also play some sublime football. However, single-player’s continued stagnation leaves a sour taste in the mouth. If goalkeepers can be addressed, EA will remain the football king. Right now, FIFA’s at risk of being clawed back in the title race.

Even ignoring the lack of competition (PES 2015 isn’t out till November 13) FIFA 15 is still a good game, but it confuses changes with improvements and many will find last year’s game to be the more enjoyable. Perhaps it’s because the franchise is still stuck between generations, and it’ll take at least till next year to focus things entirely on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
