thesixthaxis.com review
Fable III is the most complete third person adventure game of the year. That’s not to say that you’ll enjoy it the most or that it is objectively the ‘best’ but the gameplay is fun, addictive and tweaked to allow players to actually play the thing rather than sit and plan routes or read instructions. The visuals are some of the best on the Xbox 360, the story is a familiar one but timeless nonetheless and drives the game to a much greater degree than any previous game in the series.

It’s the most structurally solid Fable game Lionhead’s ever made. And the simplicity of its overlay has allowed the studio’s talented team to go wild, conjuring up some truly creative quests – and by ‘eck are they entertaining.

There are problems, yes, but in a nutshell Fable III is a flawed diamond, and it’s one that shines pretty bloody bright as a fun, unique twist on RPG traditions of old. It seems by testing the player’s ability to keep promises, Lionhead has been able to keep a few old promises of their own.

If you really, really disliked Fable II, or are determined to judge it as a hardcore RPG, you probably won’t like this either; but for us, Fable III represents the pinnacle of British-made game development. A stunning achievement.

Fable 3 is another hit from Lionshead. Buy it. It’s really good. It’s easy to play, it’s fun and something all gamers will enjoy. The one question it leaves though is how different is it from Fable 2? Is it like an entirely new game or is it a very large expansions pack? It still has the same excellent talking puzzle doors and the equivalent of the Gargoyle chase (this time in the form of gnomes) but has it really delivered an experience that’s 2 years on?

From raising a family, becoming a land baron, and even partnering up with friends locally or online, this is the most fully realized version of Albion yet. It’s a must-play for fans of adventure or anyone who thinks they can run things better than those bums in Washington. Good luck.

This is a massive game, and yet it remains accessible to gamers of all skill levels. That in itself is a pretty special achievement. Tack on a solid combat system, an immersive world, and decisions with real consequences, and you’ve got a game that just about anybody can enjoy.

Fable 3 is the best Fable yet. It’s mature and thought provoking, with a final act that will genuinely surprise and confound you. It could’ve been a masterpiece, but its many technical problems bring it down.

I can’t say I didn’t enjoy Fable III. I’m on my ninth wedding and I sometimes load it up just to play the Lute Hero job mini-game. The plot really sticks in my craw, however, to the point where I almost don’t want to talk about it at all — pretend it doesn’t even exist. I mean, how can I really say I enjoyed a game where the only way to win is to not play?

Fable III is an enormously rich experience in which no moment is lacking; however, the collective experience, how it connects to the narrative spine, is less than the sum of its parts.

It may be messy and clunky from time to time along the way, but Fable III is only guilty of indulging its designers’ whim at the expense of necessary polish, and in the royal scheme of things it’s a crime you’re happy to pardon. Many more RPGs will follow between now and whatever Lionhead does next with the series, but few if any will possess half as much heart, and most importantly, whatever else they have to offer, none will have Albion.

If you’ve played previous Fable games, you’ll know exactly what to expect from this game. It’s really funny and full of enthralling sidequests, main mechanics aren’t anywhere near as dynamic as Peter Molyneux would have you believe, and the story isn’t quite satisfying. But that’s cotton candy for you.

Molyneux’s fervent quest for accessibility might alienate some core gamers, but even the most cynical of critics would struggle to suppress a smile while playing Fable III. To enjoy a game to this extent despite so many flaws only serves to show how utterly compelling adventuring in Albion can be.

Fable III is a mix of oddities mixed in with moments of greatness tempered by disappointment, which has really stemmed from Molyneux himself – both from his desire to push the boundaries of the RPG experience and his own hype.

Fable III is a good game, and in some ways it’s a great one. But playing it, one can’t help but wonder what it would be with better combat and a more thoughtful second half.

Not only has Fable once again failed to live up to its promise, it’s gotten further away from it than before, and that’s an incredibly frustrating shame.
