Disney Epic Mickey is up there amongst the best platform games. Warren Spector and Junction Point have managed to create a game that is finely balanced, well crafted and visually wonderful. It’s a game that should be in every platformer fan’s collection, or indeed on the shelf of any gamer. This is not just a wonderful experience but it is the perfect homage to the rich Disney heritage.

At times, it’s one of the best-looking games on Wii – it swims in its own painterly style, and the Disney-grade animation lends every motion some real punch. If you look past its shortcomings as an admittedly un-epic platformer, you’ll see that Epic Mickey is a deep game with explicit replay value and immense character.

The attention to detail in the environments is superb, with little touches here and there for fans to pick up on, and the many forgotten characters are excellent. The platforming is top notch when the camera doesn’t get in the way, and the paint and thinner mechanics give the game a unique hook. Even with a smattering of issues that will cause annoyance, Disney Epic Mickey is a fine addition to the upper echelon of the Wii’s software library.

If story and character matter more to you than technical details, or if you and your family are Disney fans, many of these problems won’t matter. Ultimately, the positive elements of Epic Mickey do manage to make this worth a shot. Going in with the proper level of expectation should manage to keep some of the WiiMote throwing to a minimum… just keep that wrist strap tight.

although it seems to be at its worst in the earlier stages. Overall, though, Epic Mickey proves satisfyingly original, fun and absorbing – it’s a pleasant, and at times interestingly twisted world in which to immerse yourself. At last, Mickey has a suitably credible means of making an impression on the world of video games.

As a platformer, Disney Epic Mickey’s mechanics are disappointing. It’s a shame – because this really is a good game hampered by some bad gameplay systems, rather than a bad game held up by a few good ones

I played through Fable 3 once, another game that relies heavily on making good or evil choices, and in that single playthrough, I feel like I got everything out of it I would want; I don’t need to play through it again as a less benevolent character. But Epic Mickey despite its mechanical flaws and sometimes over-reliance on gaming tropes, makes me want to play through it again and see how the world would be different if I wasn’t so nice.

Epic Mickey falls short of brilliance, but because it stands on such a strong concept, it doesn’t always need brilliance to remain compelling. This is a game that older (and younger) Disney fans could easily call their favorite of all time. If due to your age (or lack of interest in videogames) you’ve never played better designed, better paced, better looking Wii titles in the same genre, you might see Epic Mickey as a work of pure genius. In a way, it’s my own lack of reverence for Disney in general, and my over-indulgence in gaming’s greatest titles, that limits my ability to enjoy Epic Mickey.

palgn.com.au review
Epic Mickey is not just a homage to Disney, it’s also a video game, and when it all comes together it’s an unfortunate disappointment. It is never a bad game per se, but it’s also never a great game. It’s too unpolished, too unrefined, and too often seems like the Disney art and referencing of Disney material was prioritised above creating a truly engaging and interesting gameplay experience. For fans of Disney Epic Mickey will play on enough nostalgia to keep the game interesting from start to finish, but others will likely find it too clumsy and uninviting for their taste. Unless they really dig collecting things.

He just needs to be Mickey, with blue skies, wholesome adventures and bright primary colours. A game with the breezy aesthetic and technical polish of Super Mario Galaxy, starring Mickey, Donald, Goofy and friends would do more to rekindle our affection for the mouse than this admirable but flawed attempt at forced reinvention.

In a sense that’s the point, since the whole world is meant to be a dumping ground for rejected characters, but that doesn’t make it any more exciting to explore. Things do improve as the game goes on, with more role-playing elements coming to the fore, but it’s not enough.
