The game makes great use of the Unreal engine and the graphics are certainly above par. They’re not the best we’ve seen in an FPS game by any means but we weren’t expecting a groundbreaking graphical masterpiece with Duke Nukem Forever. Level designs are varied and detailed in most parts. The sound in the game helps bring it to life – from the heavy guitar riffs to Duke’s cheesy banter, this is exactly what Duke Nukem fans want. We could have used some more dialogue though, particularly in the more gritty and dark Hive levels.

The game eases the player in comfortably, using various set pieces as a disguise for the tutorial prompts, no doubt a commonplace design choice in contemporary shooters. Duke’s controls are solid as expected but feel somewhat heavy handed and cumbersome in comparison to that of its marketplace rivals. Duke can often become unwieldy in times of intense combat, likely a relic of generations passed in the games lengthy development period. The game’s arcade-esque shooting mechanics are also juxtaposed by the ability to only carry two weapons at any given time. This makes things a little frustrating for those who just want to blast away with a wide arsenal at the push of a button, again, likely an odd design choice unresolved over the years (though Duke makes self-reference to this, occasionally exclaiming “you make me wish I had 3 guns!â€)

Multiplayer has also been included in the game that contains some thoroughly entertaining multiplayer options, all with Duke themes. We have death match (Duke Match), team death match (Team Dukematch), King of the Hill (Hail to the King) and my favourite capture the flag (Capture the Babe). These are just traditional multiplayer modes that are made better by the very cool environments like Duke Burger and a wild west inspired area called Morningwood where you fight. I’ll say it again but it’s like going back in time again but with FULL HD graphics.

Duke Nukem Forever will not be winning any awards come year’s end, unless they’re ironic. I expect to see many reviewers really slam the game, due to the dated graphics, unnecessary frustration, occasionally schizophrenic design and having waited over a decade for just another fun FPS. There are lots of things Duke does right however, like ridiculous levels of interactivity, variety in level design and for entertaining me personally all the way through.

And with that said, I probably won’t spend any more time with the game period. I’m glad Gearbox stepped up and finished this game, but after hearing about it for 12 years, I have no desire to relive any of it again. I’m now satisfied in my knowledge of what Duke Nukem Forever is and ready to never talk about it again. Welcome back, Duke. I hope your next game (which is teased after the credits) goes off without a hitch.

Duke Nukem Forever features multiplayer support, too, but it’s an extremely barebones offering that makes we wonder why they even bothered including it. Unless you want to relive what FPS deathmatches were like in the late 90s, skip it.

In most cases, the sections in Duke Nukem Forever that connect the shooting are dull, derivative experiences that feel like they exist for no other reason than to bloat the story mode, and it isn’t clear if they’re meant to parody video game filler content. It might be different if Duke approached a puzzle section, laughed, lobbed some curse words at it and moved on, but since we’re forced to solve the puzzles to continue it’s not tongue-in-cheek satire, unless the joke is on us.

Duke Nukem Forever is a game that has a sense of humor. Yet it’s a bit like that comedian who tells a really good joke at the beginning of the show but just won’t let it go. After a while, the joke gets stale, and you’re left checking your watch and wondering when it’s going to end. Duke Nukem Forever takes one of the most beloved icons of the nineties and turns him into a walking stereotype stuck in a half-formed world with only a few one-liners to get him through the alien invasion.

On top of all this, DNF is hurt by the fact that its graphics are really bad. Yes, it’s using an old engine, but surely it could have been polished up more than this during those 14 years. In multiplayer, it’s almost got a kind of kitschy charm to it — the graphics are blocky enough and the animations are choppy enough that it’s kind of amusing in a weird way. But this game looks so bad that you wonder if the designers and artists spent much time on the graphics at all.
