Under the direction of Raphael Colantonio, lead designer of Arx Fatalis, and Harvey Smith, lead designer on Deus Ex, Dishonored is set for a release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2012. Additionally, Viktor Antonov, the designer of Half-Life 2’s City 17, will be lending his vision to Dishonored.

For those worried about Dishonored’s open-ended level design combined with Bethesda’s reputation for releasing buggy games, fear not. Playing Dishonored on the PC was a refreshingly bug-free experience for me. I never crashed or experienced any odd visual glitches. Despite exploring the levels thoroughly and cramming myself into some tight spots while hiding from guards, I never fell through a level or got stuck someplace I couldn’t get out of. Enemy creatures and characters, though sometimes erring on the side of generosity in terms of being able to detect my movements, displayed solid A.I. and never got stuck in the levels or behaved erratically. While the most creative players are sure to find ways to "break" the game, it’s quite solid and shouldn’t need much, if any, patching after release.

Dishonored manages something well beyond a solid product – it gives us a taste of stealth that has gone unfilled for quite some time. With the randomization system running full tilt, so many alternate entrances and escapes, and a plethora of collectables, the game lends replay value well beyond the already-impressive 20 hours of gameplay. Developer Arkane Studios has a portfolio that includes Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Bioshock 2 (they did the design, animation, and art), and now Dishonored, so it shouldn’t come as a shock that this game feels like a blend of those previous titles and last-gen stealth powerhouse, Thief. Whether you like to sneak, like to slay mercilessly, or somewhere in between, there is something here for you. Dishonored is very easily a contender for Game of the Year.

An objective note tells me I’ve prevented the poisoning, with my ingenious and totally intentional distraction technique, so now I just need to take out my target. I slip back out of the window before the metal shutters come down, and Blink down to street level. There’s a gutter down here with a tiny window into the Grand Overseer’s safe room, so all that’s left to do is to load my crossbow and wait.

Arkane Studios has doubled down on the importance of a solo experience, as Dishonored has no multiplayer component at all – and I’m absolutely happy with that. Sure, it’s got some problems, like some missions with separately-loaded sections that can occasionally reset guards if you merely knocked them out rather than killed them, forcing you to deal with them all over again, or a few framerate issues on slightly low-end PCs that are still comfortably above the minimum requirements. But this kind of a thinking-man’s action game doesn’t come along too often, and Dishonored has many of those difficult-to-include things that a true FPS-RPG that’s descended from Deus Ex and Ultima Underworld should have. Pure FPS fans may not be too excited and there are a few minor problems, but this is a rare gem that anyone looking for a more cerebral action game should be paying serious attention to. And by "paying serious attention", I mean that you should buy it.

There’s a crossbow for longer shots, with Corvo’s grotesque metal mask’s eyeglass used to zoom in like a scope. The bow’s speciality is silent headshots, either with your small stock of Sleep Darts or standard bolts. There’s also a grenade and the Spring Razor, a mine packed with coiled razor wire. Finally, there’s your blade, which perfectly suits both slicing throats and tense duels in which parrying is the secret to sending your foes staggering. In return for money you find lying around the levels, Piero will upgrade these weapons, either by increasing their ammo capacity or power. Once your pistol can fire three rounds in quick succession, you’re positively lethal in any situation.

The level design in Dishonored is very good. In fact, it’s one best aspects of the game, since it allows you to consider various approaches and that becomes vital in most mission situations. There’s also plenty to do if you’re up for the non-lethal option of completing an objective. Certain missions denote more challenge if you decide to go with this option, which is a commendable addition to the game. Taking the non-lethal route doesn’t just change how other characters perceive you in the game, but it often offers additional tasks, prolonging the mission and making things even more interesting.
