The game puts players in the mighty boots of DeathSpank, the “Dispenser of Justiceâ€, “Vanquisher of Evil†and “Hero to the Downtroddenâ€. His life-long destiny is to embark on an epic journey in search of a mysterious artifact known only as, “The Artifactâ€. DeathSpank will feature local co-op gameplay, allowing friends to team up on the same console as both DeathSpank and his trusty sidekick, Sparkles the Wizard. Sparkles’ abilities are magical, serving as the perfect complement DeathSpank’s weapons-based attacks as the duo battle against the intolerant minions of injustice.

On top the necessity to level-grind, defeating the majority of foes requires very little strategy at all. More often than not, attacks can be initiated with a ranged weapon and will do enough damage that by the time the enemy gets within melee range, a single swipe of a sword or one more arrow will take them out. While it doesn’t work in all situations, it is effective enough that it will become a common strategic method.

If you like sweet loot, hacking things to death, looking at beautiful landscapes and laughing at good writing, you might want to pick up DeathSpank. However, although the game shines in many areas, it does have its flaws. Questing can turn into a noticeable chore, and I would have gladly substituted some of the “go fetch†missions in favor of some more brainteasers. Still, DeathSpank is a fun adventure worth exploring.

The keyboard controls aren’t as intuitive as a gamepad, so you’d do well to plug one in for this adventure. Clicking to run around and attack just doesn’t feel as comfortable, and the keyboard is limited to two weapon slots at a time instead of the four with a gamepad. Odd, considering the fact that a keyboard has, you know, a whole bunch of keys on it. Even with the gamepad, though, the game is real finicky about remapping the buttons (when I made a mistake it wouldn’t let me simply delete the button I chose – I had to write over it with a new button) which can quickly cause frustration with the limited amount of buttons that a gamepad has.

However, they at least serve the purpose of leading you through the colorful world of DeathSpank. The game’s art style is quite charming; foliage and buildings appear as cardboard cutouts, the enemies are varied and fit the environments nicely, and the world rolls along as you walk, similar to the giant planetoids from Super Mario Galaxy. Unfortunately, the camera angle means that some enemies can shoot at you without the player being able to target them back, but this doesn’t last long.

I think DeathSpank as a whole is still a rather enjoyable game. The combat works and works very well. The constant acquiring of new weapons and loot really keep the gamer playing. The only problem is the fact that all the quests boil down to gathering a bunch of items or killing a certain number of enemies. I think if you took your time with the game and try not to rush through it, you won’t get as burned out on the quests. Plus, with a play time of just under 8 hours, you’ll definitely get your $15 worth out of it.
