Dead Rising 2 is set a few years after the infamous zombie invasion of Willamette. Unfortunately, the zombie virus was not contained at the conclusion of Dead Rising, spreading unchecked throughout the United States and Dead Rising 2 depicts a country where zombie outbreaks continue to strike.

gameshark.com review
Like Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2, this Dead Rising is no mere comfort food. It’s skillfully made-to-order for people who are hip to zombie mythology, who don’t think of Doom or Daikatana when they hear the name “Romero”. It’s neither an action game, or a strategy game, or an RPG, or an open-world game, because it’s all of them. Consider that any other zombie game you can think of is a pre existing type of gameplay, but with zombies added. Dead Rising 2 is now only the second title with gameplay built from the ground up on the concept of a zombie apocalypse. That it’s also the best is just gravy.

Of course, none of this is going to matter if you can’t get past the central premise of the title. The leveling up system and non-stop escort missions are going to turn a lot of gamers off. While I understand that point of view, I had nothing but a great time exploring the themed casinos, finding all of the secrets and assembling bigger and better weaponry. If you can stick through a restart or two, Dead Rising 2 is flush with great content and fun cultural gags.

Dead Rising was an enjoyable experience, full of the undead, a bit of cheese, and a likeable yet somewhat flat protagonist in Frank West. DR 2 ups the ante to provide similar thrills, but overall feels like a much more fuller game.

Ultimately, it’s a fantastic sandbox game for sandbox gamers. If you’re in the market for a strong single-player story-based game, I’d say look elsewhere. However, if you like to play games in short installments or are just a completion-ist (as the game has tons of unlockables and achievements) give Dead Rising 2 a look. There’s enough fun and laughs to be had that it should keep you occupied for weeks if not months.

Dead Rising 2 isn’t a game you play once. While its length is perfectly fine in terms of what its peers offer, its rewards stretch out through other playthroughs. The constant quest to survivor perfection is obviously the biggest draw, but different means to an end or usage of particular weapons in a given situation or scenario carries a similar attraction. It’s also an absolute joy to indulge in the absolutely senseless nature of your activities, the game is crazy, and an observing it’s serious take on the grand conspiracy alongside its ridiculous premise is half the fun.

Dead Rising 2 confirms that this is a development team that listens. Taking the good from the original and cutting or fixing the bad. It still carries all the horror spliced with comedy from the first and creates a world that intrigues, entertains and disgusts in equal measure.

Dead Rising 2 has annoying technical flaws and uninteresting boss battles. But the ability to jump into a friend’s game while wearing a Borat-inspired mankini and a Servbot helmet with a lawnmower blade strapped on top help you quickly forget those problems.

Dead Rising 2 doesn’t vary too much from its predecessor but that’s part of its charm. The flaws of the original have been addressed and this time round, the multiplayer modes add some real longevity.

The thing about the Dead Rising series is that it’s pretty unique. Killing hordes of zombies with a huge variety of improvised weaponry isn’t a genre present anywhere else. It’s a great game to just mess around in, picking up random clothing, smashing zombie heads in and fighting away psychopaths. It’s really got its flaws, but looking beyond those shows a really fun sandbox title to play in.

The only goal: kill anything that moves, especially if it has a balloon attached to it. Those are worth more points. The cash earned during the TIR session are carried over to your single-player progress, which makes trips to the Pawnshop for vital items merely a bump in the road, rather than a race against time.

All in all, I’d still have to say Dead Rising 2 is a great sequel to a very unique and entertaining series. Yes, it does have its faults, and yes, they can become controller throwing frustrating, but still it has so much charm, that I can honestly look past its flaws. You have to play the game the way it wants to be played, not the way you want to play it.

For the people who know what to expect, Dead Rising 2 will be a fantastic zombie slaying experience. It’s full of humour, satire and atmosphere and as long as you play by its rules it’s also full of fun. Those who go in expecting a free-for-all genocidal rampage will be disappointed – at least they will until they realise what they’re supposed to do. Oh, and the loading times will piss everyone off – but it’s worth it.

Even though there are plenty of weapons to make, these weapons are not created equal, and although some of them seem awesome at first, there are some mechanical issues that can cause you to trade down in some cases. For example, the paddlesaw I mentioned above is a brutal weapon in sparsely populated areas, as it dispatches 2-3 zombies at a time with ease. However, get in a big crowd with a paddlesaw, and you’ll see that the imprecise mechanics make it hard to direct the paddlesaw towards a single area with any accuracy, which can have deadly consequences. Although there is an “aiming mode” you can use with the left trigger, this mode is a bit sluggish in most instances.

eurogamer.net review
The harder edges of the first game have been softened a little, no doubt thanks to the involvement of a Western studio. The result is a balanced game, at once idiosyncratic, infuriating, funny and ultimately compelling. In both its story and its systems, it holds life and undeath in delicate tension; and as a result, all the loud-mouth college humour and violence fail to mask its tender heart.

Watching Chuck get covered in blood as he slays thousands of zombies, changing outfits so that one minute you’re in a toddler clothes with a LEGO head and the next you’re in a sundress, and listening to completely whacked out boss stories – that’s what I remember about Dead Rising 2. Any issue the game might have just falls to the backburner.

While not a huge departure from the original Dead Rising template, Dead Rising 2’s concession to friendlier game-saves and excellent addition of a creative and funny weapon-crafting system make it a rewarding and gleefully entertaining experience. But alas, the corpse-killing hijinks are noticeably marred by some inexcusable hark-backs to archaic game design. A lot of fun then, but with some definite frustrations.

As a whole, Dead Rising 2 is a tuned, tweaked and polished sequel. Some schools of thought suggest that sequels should be a departure from their predecessor, but Dead Rising 2 forgoes this view. Instead, it builds on the strengths of Dead Rising: the story is better, there are more save slots and combo weapons make zombie extermination ever the more enticing.

Dead Rising’s failings can be put down to naivety, but here they exist by design. They’ll delight the original’s devotees, but to those used to games that aren’t at war with their players, Dead Rising 2 is an almightily frustrating shock to the system.

Dead Rising 2 doesn’t exactly build that much on the original game, but then again many would argue that it didn’t really need to. If you were a big fan of Frank and his zombie-smashing ways, prepare to make good friends with Chuck and his very familiar journey. If, however, you didn’t enjoy the previous action all that much, you’re not going to have a ball here either.
