All this adds up to the surprise of 2011 so far, everything about this game screams joy, that even the fact it can be too easy at times and has some frustrations, doesn’t wipe that smile from your face. Games like this deserve to succeed and deserve to be recognised for how good they are.

There are two paths that games of de Blob’s ilk tend to take: The developer gets overambitious, introducing too many new concepts without polishing the basics, or the developer isn’t ambitious enough and creates a ho-hum, me-too platformer. De Blob 2 straddles the line between those two doomed paths.

DeBlob2 is sure to have a strong following and I’m certain DeBlob3 is on the horizon (there have been announcements of multimedia entries like a TV series: ala Sonic or Pac Man). A comprehensive multiplayer component and more challenging game modes (just lock Pinky in a trunk for a while) would be welcome additions to the franchise

The music takes a life of its own as well. We’re fans of the changing styles that come your way whenever you get a new color absorbed, and the little sound effects (including the gibberish spoken by the citizens) are smile inducing. No, De Blob 2 won’t change the way you play platforming games, but if you’re a fan or you’re up for a fun family game that won’t bore you to tears like the others usually would, this is the way to go. De Blob 2 is simply De-lightful.

The basics of gameplay are pretty basic, as they should be in a good platform game. de Blob absorbs color from color pools or wandering inkbots and transfers color to buildings and objects by bumping them, jumping on them, or rolling along their sides. Colors can be combined to create new colors, so jump in a yellow pool and then in a blue one and you’ll have a green-colored de Blob.

The single player campaign is where you will get more up close and personal with INKT and their leader Comrade Black. Comrade Black has taken over and he has brainwashed the majority of the population and turned them into Blanc soldiers. As you progress in the story you will keep meeting new types of enemies as well as learning new skills.

There’s no need to have any familiarity with the original de Blob to enjoy the sequel. It’s enough to know that there’s an evil faction called the Inkies, led by the bumbling Comrade Black. Under his command, the INKT Corporation has sucked all the color out of Prisma City – and it comes down to the heroic Blob and his buddies to paint the whole place back to normal and free its residents from their oppressive greyscale existence.

de Blob 2 has a Super Mario Galaxy-esque co-op mode that puts Player 2 in the support role of shooting enemies and painting that would’ve been far more enjoyable if the ammo was unlimited. Player 1 will have to spend Inspiration Points to increase the amount of ammunition Player 2 can hold – points that could be used to increase their own paint-carrying capacity or armor. Blob Party, multiplayer challenges to see who’s the best Blob, are far more fun.

This isn’t to say bringing color back to Prisma isn’t fun or playful, even for surly hardcore gamers. Indeed, a well of entertainment lays in Blob’s rejuvenating the world, set to a dynamic soundtrack. Sit back, gorge Blob in pools of color and paint surroundings that are initially bland palates with almost no enveloping aural quality. As more color bleeds into the world, however, wonderfully eclectic rhythms come alive. Ranging from jazz alley styles mixed with the scratches of a turntable, to Latin-flavored beats, played with organs, trumpets, bongos and the like, the soundtrack’s entirety is simultaneously innocuous and engaging.

There’s also a new co-operative option, which also seems to be partially inspired by Super Mario Galaxy – in the sense that the other player doesn’t really have that much influence on events. No co-op option is ever entirely a waste, but thanks to the awful camera this one comes close.
gameinformer.com review
Multiplayer challenges and a co-op mode position de Blob 2 as an optimal shared experience for a parent and young child. The Super Mario Galaxy-esque cooperative play allows the second player to paint objects and foes as Blob’s sidekick Pinky. This helps less-skilled gamers contribute to the experience in a meaningful manner without being overwhelmed by the difficulty of later levels.

De Blob 2 is like a blank canvas ready to have your creativity unleashed upon it. It’s an excellent sequel that improves on aspects from the original and includes some new, nifty additions. While it does rely heavily on exploiting these features, the game never reaches the point of monotony. Fans of the original will be pleased, and players unsure whether to dip their feet in this pool of bright colors should definitely take the plunge.

The replay value is not terribly strong unless you really appreciate the somewhat soothing-quality of endless rolling/painting, which can be lovely when you don’t want to think too much. Certainly de Blob 2 is worth checking out if only because you need a break from epic first-person shooters or intense puzzle games (hey, it happens sometimes).

de Blob 2 (or one of it’s future iterations) is a game that we are going to be playing together at some point in your life. It’s not perfect, but it is a game that we could bond over and have a lot of fun enjoy playing together. You may not understand what’s going on at first but the bright colors, awesome soundtrack, and easy to learn gameplay will enchant you like nothing else.

De Blob 2, like its predecessor, is an undeniably cheerful, whimsical, and infectiously amusing venture that’s impossible to dislike unless you’re Ebenezer Scrooge (pre-spiritual epiphany, that is). It has some creative gameplay and it satisfies that primitive need to finish a page in a coloring book once you’ve started it. It’s not as deep as it wants to be, but it has enough substance to pick up and play after buying it for your kids (or younger siblings). We wish it had stretched its creative muscles more and really expanded on the potential for coloring puzzles instead of playing it safe so as not to be too difficult for young brains. After all, kids are smarter than they’re given credit for most of the time.

De Blob 2 has great moments, when the music, the visuals, and the act of restoring color to the world all come together to create a sense of pure joy. These high points make the frustrations all the more disappointing; there are times when you experience the great game that de Blob 2 almost was.

de Blob 2 is much like a giant coloring book and you play as a Kirby like blob that must bring life back to a colorless world because of the evil INKT Corporation.
