You also find out that there are two bells, one up and one down from where you are currently, and that if you ring them, something special happens. Dark Souls might not be for you. Of course, that’s not saying much; thanks to the universal rule of, "there’s no accounting for taste," even the most lauded games have their detractors — and on the same note, altogether crummy productions often earn a devoted cult following. In this wild and wooly world of game reviews, scores don’t necessarily apply equally to everyone; one man’s "A" for something like Fifa 12 could be an "F" for those who find soccer a terrible waste of time. That said, I have a few questions: Are you patient? Can you devote dozens upon dozens of hours to a single game? Does the thought of unbridled independence fill you with elation rather than abject terror?

Put as simply as possible, Dark Souls is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to Demon Souls’ Castlevania III. The distinct worlds that comprised Demon’s Souls are gone, having been replaced by a massive, seamless world that can take upwards of 80 hours to explore. It may lack the wide open plains or mountains of Oblivion, but the scope is no less impressive.

It’s not the story, although the coma-ish, whisper of a narrative unsettles and disorientates as much as it informs. This is not the story of the brave shepherd boy who leaves his village to save the world but rather the story of a beleaguered warrior limping his way through a shadow world of leviathans, wild-eyed witches and devastating setbacks en route to an undeclared prize. The characters you meet are not straight-talking quest-givers so much as confused freaks, just as likely to befriend you as murder what few allies you have. We’re a long way from the Mushroom Kingdom.

This is easily the best improvement to the "Souls" formula. Respawning every enemy creates an invisible buffer between the player and their next objective. That buffer pre-grinds the player for his or her next soul-crushing challenge. I personally hate grinding in JRPGs. Of all the contrite, boring, monotonous modes of play in gaming, grinding is the worst.

Video games – in an attempt to appeal to as large a market as possible – generally tend towards making things easier for the player. Many people do in fact play video games as a relaxing escape, instead of a test of their skill or a masochistic exercise in frustration. From Software and Namco have upheld the Demon’s Souls tradition of not telling the player anything despite the game’s vast size and complexity. Dark Souls opts for the information blackout, and the level of discomfort that this choice creates is key to the game’s strange charm. The development team knows what gamers like and need, then denies them those crutches in exchange for alienation and impotence. You will work to beat this game. You will grind. But when you do beat it, you will experience elation that not many other games can elicit.

At first you’ll start off with the basics, like a longsword that you find off a fallen knight or a shield that barely protects you from a devastating hit or two. Eventually, though, you’ll gain powers that help you along, including magical spells that dish out powerful fire blasts, something you’ll need against bigger enemies in the game. And they start appearing…well, about five minutes in. Dark Souls doesn’t hide its intentions. It pounds you with them the millisecond you start a game. After entering our first room, we came face to face with a blob-like creature that smashed us into bits before we even knew what was going on. After barely surviving this encounter, you’ll make your way through villages, castles, murky graveyards, poison swamps and other locales, tracking down new items and attempting to kill any enemies that come your way. A word of warning: if you’re expecting a basic hack and slash journey with Dark Souls, you won’t get it. Sure, you can cut enemies down to size, but you’re VERY vulnerable, and making the mistake of rushing into a battle or leaving yourself unprotected could be very costly – even with a few swigs of a health flask or a Humanity recovery. If you’re not careful, your blood will be easily spilled. Proceed with caution, and think to yourself before every encounter – even the seemingly smaller ones – “how the hell am I gonna survive this?â€.

The game’s overall format is much like this first area, and you cannot simply run through the game. Grinding in Dark Souls is an art form, and one you’ll have to master quite early. As you kill enemies, you’ll collect a set amount of souls from each victim. These souls can then be used as leveling currency to slightly improve your stats, one level at a time. But there’s a bit of a twist to this mechanic.

At first, the combat feels clunky, but it clicks when you realise it’s all about timing your strikes to when enemies are just about to attack, or parrying their attacks and replying while they are still off balance. Each type of undead you face has a distinct way in which it acts, and things start getting really fun when you’re beset by several different types at once.
