Castle Crashers features a unique mix of beat’em up action along with RPG elements letting you hack, slash and smash your way to victory. Along the way adorable Animal Orbs can be discovered who will do everything from helping you find buried items to chomping on the enemy’s head. For the masochistic, the game also features an “Insane Mode†unlocked after defeating regular mode, which is… well… insanely hard! When beating up the bad guys just isn’t enough, battle it out in the Arena mode for a team or free-for-all, 4-player deathmatch.

The game features 4-person multiplayer and plays both on and offline. If you have 2 people playing offline, jump onto Live and get 2 more players. Want to go solo? Your choice too. I played the game over the weekend with two friends and we had an absolute blast playing and leveling up our characters. Characters you level can be taken both online and to other friend’s houses, so you’ll always have your progress.

The graphics and music in this game are more like a dream, a really good one. You cannot quite figure out what is going on around you at times, but your eyes and ears are still absorbing wonderful images and sounds. Running in full screen helps, plus those colourful worlds are just too cute to be ignored. You will even enjoy running on grass in this game, only because of how green the grass is! The music will adjust depending on the situation all game long too, adding up to the already perfect experience.

The other big appeal comes from the stellar 2D design work by Paladin, which is obviously similar to Alien Hominid, and features some cutesy stuff mixed with a bit of potty humor and gore. Maybe it’s not for everyone, but there are a lot of funny little visual gags thrown around. The soundtrack is also pretty stellar, with a variety of tracks spread out across not just the levels but the boss encounter as well. It all fits the world of Castle Crashers really well, and it’s one of the best XBLA soundtracks out there.

Video games have come a long way since man first slipped a quarter into an arcade machine. These days, if a game doesn’t have a free-roaming environment or bump maps on every surface, it seems to fall to the wayside. Thankfully, we have games like Castle Crashers to remind us how fun simplicity used to be. The beat ‘em up gameplay and unique presentation go a long way, and for lack of a better explanation, the game is just damn fun.

This game is built for multiplayer and there’s lots of it. Along with being able to team up with three friends in a co-op game, you can also endure a free-for-all Arena battle against countless foes. For button-mashing kicks, there’s also an "All You can Quaff" minigame, where you chow down on as much food as possible by tapping the X and Y buttons. On the downside, there are intermittent connection issues that occur. We hope that Microsoft will fix this so people can enjoy Crashers online.

There are two issues which will likely hamper your enjoyment of combat in Castle Crashers. There are a few spots throughout the game where the environment or effects (damn you to hell, confetti) make it very difficult to see what is going on. It can get frustrating, because there’s really no place for these moments of diluted visuals. This is not often a concern, but it certainly does come up.

Overall, Castle Crashers is not only in my opinion, a game that stands up well with the classic greats it’s paying tribute to, but an excellent game that, at 15 bucks, deserves a space in every 360 gamer’s library, despite it’s (small) flaws (that will be fixed soon!).

The only downside to the artwork is that it can be difficult to tell what’s going on when there is a lot of action on the screen – and trust me, there is no lack of action in this game. You will often be swarmed by as many as 10 enemies at a time, and if you take advantage of the four-player co-operative mode (both online and local) things can get so busy you can actually lose track of your character.

There are some additional modes, too, but I think that the character unlocking and ability to level up multiple characters separately – the four original characters all have their own unique magic attacks – is what’s going to occupy most gamers’ time. The sad part is that the game does have some occasional but serious bugs, causing some end-level bosses to break entirely, forcing you to pop back to the menu and restart the level. Beyond that, the game can crash when trying to join a game over Live, and that’s if you can get in at all – it’s very sensitive to the NAT settings on your router and internet connection, so if pretty much anyone is having an issue you can get dumped back to the main menu. In my experience so far, it’s better to play with people you know who have their network set up correctly, as trying to find games over Live often leaves you staring at the connection screen for 20 minutes until you just get disgusted and go play single player.

The game touts online multiplayer coop for the entire game however at the time of writing this either doesn’t work or is very, very laggy. It’s a shame, and if all your friends are out of immediate reach you might want to wait for The Behemoth to patch the netcode in the game.

The game maintains the stylish cell shaded look they gave Alien Hominid, which is to say it is gorgeous and cartoony. The variety of locations and enemies is impressive as they come for a game its size. Their unique sense of humor is intact here, as well. Little things, like entering a giant frog’s mouth to shop for weapons give are cute, and the bigger laughs are even better, like the tip of the cap to Terminator 2 in the end of a certain boss battle. The presentation of the level map is a sly nod to old school games like Super Mario Bros 3, as is much of the game’s design. There is even a deer-riding sequence that will send chills down the spine of anyone old enough to remember breaking a controller over the speeder level of Battletoads. You cannot help but feel that this is a gushing love letter to side-scrolling beat em ups of years past.

There is an online mode, but unfortunately has been very problematic with issues connecting to games or save files being lost. A patch is in the works but you’re best to call your friends to your place instead.

The game is hard to rate on its individual components, but I can confidently state that as a whole it’s a lot of fun. Having said that, after solidly playing it for a while, I just don’t crave it like I do other games. If not for the challenging achievements and fresh take on every single level in the campaign mode, I don’t think I’d have played it as much as I have in the last few days.

Castle Crashers also has some rather pleasing multiplayer vs modes too from the weird All you can Quaff to the rather more satisfying arena-based combat levels where you can beat all other players for the honour of laying a smacker on the rescued princess.
