you can play the whole game in 3D (not for me, as my glasses-wearing eyes end up producing a nasty headache after prolonged 3D). Call of Duty games are, as I mentioned, about moments, and there’re a whole lot of moments, player and developer generated, in this game. It’s easy to say that this is Treyarch’s best game…when it’s not just trying to imitate Infinity Ward.

Combat training allows anyone to enjoy the thrills of arena combat and the satisfaction of leveling up, and the opportunities for cooperative play, local competition, and community video creation provide even more outlets for entertainment. Call of Duty: Black Ops lives up to the top-notch pedigree that the series has earned, giving players an awesome new shooter to enjoy just in time for the holidays.

So Black Ops is quite the package, and Treyarch can finally begin to create a Modern Warfare-esque franchise of their own, built on this sturdy foundation. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that they try to stamp their own ideas on future iterations rather than depending on safe bets from the one series they should be trying to overtake.

We can only hope that the team at Infinity Ward has the humility to learn from and implement the features Treyarch has introduced when it comes to the next Call Of Duty, particularly with regards to multiplayer. And if there were ever a sentence we didn’t expect to write, that would certainly be it.

Treyarch has brought along its world famous Zombie co-op mode complete with some rather unlikely protagonists in a map that you unlock after completing the campaign (which we won’t go into for spoiler reasons). When you add this to the 4-player campaign co-op and local split-screen multiplayer options, Black Ops really is stocked with content that’s been intelligently dished out, allowing gamers to play precisely how and with whom they want. You really have to look to the likes of Halo: Reach for another shooter that’s just as well-stocked with options and modes.

Treyarch isn’t trying to reinvent the formula which made Modern Warfare 2 the most successful video game of all time, but it has laid down solid multiplayer foundations while adding a series of necessary and intelligent tweaks – which should be music to the ears of the game’s many fans. A spectacular but silly single-player campaign rounds off the package, and while it comes without Modern Warfare 2’s ambitious (but unsuccessful) attempt at carving out a political message, Black Ops offers its own thoroughly enjoyable romp through some entertaining set-pieces. I’ve considered myself a Call of Duty fan for many years, and I’ve held a deep-seated distrust of Treyarch since Call of Duty 3. No longer.

Call of Duty remains the smoothest, most approachable first-person shooter out there, and I had a blast playing it. On the other hand, it’s disappointing that Treyarch’s much-hyped huge-budget entry in the franchise feels like Modern Warfare 2.5. Activision hasn’t Tony Hawked Call of Duty yet, though, and I’m happy to get a refined update. This year, anyway.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is a great overall package that has a ton of content to enjoy. The multiplayer modes are largely based on what was established by Modern Warfare, but the twists that Treyarch throws in work well. My biggest issue with the multiplayer is that the new Wager Matches, while fun in their own right, don’t compare favorably to the high-quality and addictive leveling system and game modes from Modern Warfare 1 and 2. Single-player is as exhaustingly fast-paced as ever with large set pieces that try to take the attention off of the lackluster AI of both friends and enemies.
