You have a set amount of HP that increases as you level up or with bonuses from certain equipment. Personal shields are upgradeable and behave just like they do in Halo, recharging after you haven’t taken any hits in a while. When your health is depleted, you have about 10 seconds before you bleed out to be rescued by a teammate a la Left 4 Dead, or else you may kill an enemy to gain a “second wind†and revive yourself. If neither of these things happens, you simply respawn at the nearest checkpoint location and are charged a fraction of your wealth.

The game’s audio is also great. The music is understated and really atmospheric, amping up and slowing down when appropriate. Voice-acting is all-around strong, with the screaming being the highlights. When someone catches on fire, you’ll definitely hear it. The only real negative is how most the guns in each respective class sound the same. A Jakobs sniper rifle sounds no different than a Vladof’s. It’s not that big of a deal, but more could’ve been done with gun sounds, considering how much of a focal point guns are in Borderlands.

If you can get by the problems, you’ll have an absolute fantastic time with Borderlands. Gearbox has really gone out of their way to create a FPS with RPG elements which is completely different than anything else out there right now. Even after 60 hours of gameplay, you’ll continue to come back for more co-op, and to find that next gun which kicks a little bit more ass than the last. If you are a fan of the genre, you owe it to yourself to give this one a try.
