Overall, Borderlands 2 is the sequel we were all hoping for. Gearbox has clung rigorously to what worked the first time around, and fleshed out the experience with refined customisation options, more variety, and a vastly more interesting story. With fantastic co-op support, there’s tonnes of longevity on offer here, and no doubt future DLC will sweeten the deal. Looting and shooting doesn’t get much better than this.

All of the improvements would make for a standout title even if it were constricted to single-player. Considering Gearbox has continued to put this franchise in a league of its own when it comes to co-op, it elevates the game to something more. With its unmatched co-op gameplay, intense shootouts, addictive loot collecting, expansive skill customization, hilarious dialogue, and insane level of replayability, Borderlands 2 is one of the most rewarding gaming experiences of this console generation.

Borderlands 2 is basically everything I wanted the first game to be. The multiplayer is a huge draw, of course (some of the very best co-op ever), but now I feel fully invested in the campaign. There’s still not a ton to see all the time, the vehicles are underused, and the story, despite those little surprises, is pretty mundane. But the exploration, the almost flawless combat, the wide-ranging areas, the decent intelligence of your foes, the fantastic design and style, the depth in character growth and development; it’s all absolutely irresistible. This is some crazy bang for your buck and you won’t regret a second of it.

It turns out that a studio doing exactly what we expected it to do – make more, better, bigger, faster and better-looking stuff – can be a good thing. Borderlands 2 is an excellent lesson in sequel-making and is easily one of 2012’s best games.

Borderlands 2 is a joyful experience, full of humour and character. It manages to walk the fine line between silly base humour and a more intelligent wit too, which is something almost unique in videogames. With a narrative that expands on the original storyline in every conceivable way and so many ways to play, different characters to build and so much cooperative fun to be had, it’s hard to see a downside. While there are occasional issues with enemies clipping into scenery and there is some quite noticeable texture fade-in as you enter new areas, it’s nothing that can’t easily be forgiven in a game of this magnitude. Borderlands 2 is one of the unmissable videogame experiences of the year.

Borderlands 2 doesn’t fool around with the sheer fun and solid cooperative play of its predecessor, with a staggering number of improvements that are difficult to argue with. On design, it’s so much like the original Borderlands that it might not feel like fully new title, but that’s not a serious negative and for some fans might even be a positive if all they really want is a better version of the first title. If you’re looking for a multiplayer title for the console, Borderlands 2 is a no-brainer—and I guess I’ll see you soon, on this side of Pandora.

I obsessed over the original Borderlands in spite of its flaws. Earning loot and exploring every little corner of the world became top priority for me when that game was released, and I kept up with its DLC add-ons, doing my best to ignore their decidedly uneven quality. Borderlands 2 is a better game in most of the ways that matter, but some of that is brought down by the familiarity of the experience. Perhaps some of that is on me and spending a couple hundred hours with the first game has rendered me resilient to some of the new game’s charms, but as someone who went into Borderlands 2 with a sickness that I thought only more Borderlands could cure, I’m left feeling like I didn’t receive a full dose this time around.
