Borderlands attempts many things, which in this medium can often end with a laundry list of features but no fully-developed ones. This is one of the rare occasions where all of the new experiences a game brings to the table work out splendidly,

This game is packed with guns. There were times where it felt like I was switching out my gun for a new one every fifteen minutes. All the staples are here – handguns, shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, etc. Just like any good RPG, as you progress in level, the guns get progressively better as well. Along with guns, the other loot you’ll find consists of grenades and different types of shields that recharge – much like the overshield in Halo.

Multiplayer mode was also great for introducing my boyfriend (a gaming noob) to the game. It was easy enough for me to call up a runner with a rocket launcher, put him in the gun turret, and drive him around the arid badlands for a while to let him blow up skags. Multiplayer also has the added bonus of being able to heal your allies, which meant that when he was busy running around in circles and being shot at, I could walk over and heal him, without having to worry about where he would respawn. And if things got a little hairy, he could run back to the safety of the runner.

Borderlands is difficult to categorize. It’s definitely a first-person shooter with a lot of different guns you can use, but the quests and character building are well-designed RPG elements. There are a lot of the time when you play Borderlands that it’ll feel like an MMO, but it’s missing the hundreds of other players and the nearly infinite gameplay. You can co-op with up to three others, which even extends the MMO feel a bit more.

Borderlands has a great look to it – it’s not quite a fully cel-shaded game, but it has a distinct comic book look to it. The violence also tends toward a comic book style, and although it would be pretty graphic in a game with realistic graphics it comes across as slightly humorous in Borderlands and fits the game’s dark, subtle, and subversive sense of humor perfectly. Pandora certainly has its own unique look and feel to it, and it stands out from the myriad of alien worlds that you’ve visited in countless other games before. And it’s not just the look of planet that makes Pandora, Pandora – everything from your chipper robot guide to the colorful locals to the mysterious woman who appears to you in brief visions, makes exploring Pandora a very interesting experience.

While the story of Borderlands isn’t outstanding, it definitely begets a setting that’s utterly fun to roam around in. After being dropped off at the nearest settlement, you’ll soon learn the ropes to surviving in the Borderlands. You’ll be given a handful of fetch quests from key Pandorians that will not only teach you the combat ropes, but they’ll get you through the first five character levels, preparing you for the far more dangerous challenges ahead.

Grinding for experience points is actually an enjoyable festivity in Borderlands. While the idea may seem daunting at first, there are two reasons why you essentially may end up falling head over heels with it. First, you’ll want guns, big guns. Not only will you want big, bad, behemoth-like blast cannons at your disposal, you’ll probably want the abilities that come along with experience points as well. From turning invisible to whipping out a Scorpio Turret, combat is amplified and ultimately made enjoyable through using these unique skills. The other nudge the game will give you is that the firefights actually feel intense, removing any snoozefest scenes that might have you walking from A to B just to get ammo. For an action RPG, the gunplay mechanics are polished from top to bottom. Borderlands plays out like a natural FPS, and for a role-playing game, that’s really an achievement in itself.

For a good portion of the game the human AI is just as bad – they’re either “Psychos” which run at you while you headshot them repeatedly or long range enemies which don’t really make effective use of cover. Eventually you find yourself up against some varied (and effective) AI – guys who rock shields, turrets and rocket launchers all manage to change things up well, but you won’t see anything spectacular from them.

Borderlands is a really solid game that does deserve a look this holiday season. Being more of a single player gamer on the consoles I was a bit let down by the games lack of attention to the single player element, but was extremely impressed with the cooperative play. All in all Borderlands is a very solid outing that although contains some minor hiccups deserves a definite look in this jam packed holiday season. Be warned though, this game can take up a ton of your time.

That’s essentially what Borderlands is: a game about treasure hunters. In a way, it’s reminiscent of a Spaghetti Western, and follows a similar formula to the film The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The setting of a lawless, dusty old west is replaced with the unfortunately named Pandora, a near-barren planet that serves as the perfect backdrop for what could have been an epic tale. Each of the three factions trying to get to the Vault even parallel characters from the Sergio Leone classic.

Borderlands is one of the best co-op games on the market. It’s fun and easy to pick up, and its unique combination of RPG and FPS elements makes it unlike anything else out there. The wide variety of skills and weapons gives you a lot of freedom in developing your character, and there is very little punishment for experimenting or playing around. However, the single-player doesn’t hold up as well, and gamers who are not looking for a multiplayer experience may be best off waiting for a price drop. On top of that, a pretty substantial number of glitches — falling through an elevator, losing the ability to fire your gun, etc. — and design problems mar the experience. These glitches can pull you out of the game at a moment’s notice, but if you’re willing to overlook them, you’ll find one of the best co-op FPSes on the market. Combining the ease of play of a FPS with the loot collection of an RPG, Borderlands has the potential to become one of the most addictive games you’ve ever played.
