It’s easy to overlook the flaws, the occasional slowdown when there’s a lot going on, and even the often-cluttered nature of the combat, because there are so many good things to pay attention to. If you strip away the sexiness and look at the core play, it’s still not perfect. Having it a little shorter and not repeating the enemies so much would be a start. Still, it’s hard not to recommend because there is just so much here for the player to do and doing it all is awesome.

If you do not care much for the story in games, then you can probably consider this as a 9.5/10. If the story means something to you, don’t worry too much because it’s still pretty good, just difficult to understand. Either way Bayonetta is a fantastic game that gives a shot in the arm to the action genre and we could not ask for a better way to kick off gaming in 2010.

Even though I could go on for days about how awesome the combat is in Bayonetta (it really is superb), I have to say that it isn’t my favorite component of the game. That honor actually belongs to the game’s creative design, which is nothing short of spectacular. Everything here, from the fiery depths of Inferno to the flowery fields of Paradiso, is incredibly rendered with lush detail, texturing, and animation. The character designs, particularly those of the angels and demons, are also amazingly creative and come to life with just the right amount of vitality. Animations never look awkward, and even though most of the creatures are of mythic lore, they move around just as you would expect them to. Bayonetta is a very smooth-looking game, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the creative team put just as much effort into the world around Bayonetta as they did Bayonetta herself.

Bayonetta is an action game fan’s wet dream. Despite a derivative structure and a few technical stumbles—like occasional slowdown and frequent screen tearing—Bayonetta takes everything that’s good about every other combo-heavy action game, cranks up the intensity, fine tunes the combat, and bundles it in a single, sexy, “au naturel†package.

Bayonetta is an odd beast, sporting beautiful environments, enemies and a combat system to rival any other action game available to date. It’s through these fantastic mechanics and creative ideas that our madcap heroine now holds a respectable place in the gaming pantheon. The action is fun, fast and varied and makes for an enjoyable romp fans of the genre would be foolish to pass up. True enough, the story makes no sense at the best of times and the characters pull the experience down considerably, yet when presented with such flash and spectacle as pushing an angel into a guillotine then ripping another in half with a chainsaw, all is forgiven. Ignore the cutscenes, strap yourself in and prepare for one adrenaline-fuelled ride. Let’s rock, baby!

That Bayonetta so happily and fearlessly throws together so many extreme elements is both the source of its many charms and its disappointments. Bayonetta’s overt, juvenile sexuality—which, let’s face it, should be an embarrassment to anyone on the far side of puberty—is rescued, if not redeemed by, its lack of seriousness and its obviously mischievous intention: let’s see how far we can push this. Its crazy-quilt story is balanced by stellar gameplay and visuals that sometimes clutter the screen, but usually do so with style and beauty. Bayonetta might not be the kind of girl you bring home to meet your mother, but she’s a lot of fun to hang out with, flaws and all.

Bayonetta is difficult to evaluate critically in ways that only games are: Should I judge it for the hours of fun I had and its frequent brilliance, ignoring the commensurate hours I sat through some of the most self-indulgent pseudo-intellectual mumbling masquerading as a cutscene since Metal Gear Solid 4 (and the fact that the game drags on approximately five hours longer than it should?)? Or should I subtract the minuses from the pluses, and punish the game accordingly? It’s a situation where a number is difficult to apply. Rather, I would leave a prospective buyer with this: If character-action games are your thing, then you owe it to yourself to give Bayonetta a try, as it represents some of the best the sub-genre has ever had to offer. However, if Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden have never stirred your interest, Bayonetta may seem at times to be everything you’ve ever thought was wrong with this type of game.

here are other aspects of the game I could go into, such as heavily recycled locations and rather lame mini games, but those are almost beside the point. The game is a conglomeration of ideas that the developers thought would be cool, and no real attempt has been made to tie everything together into anything remotely cohesive. If you love nonsensical Japanese animation along the lines of Chinpokomon and button-mashing your way through hordes of bizarre enemies you’ll be in heaven. If not, well, the game’s novelty may hold your attention for about an hour before you’ve had enough of it, and you’ll be left wondering just what all the hype was about.

It’s tough to assess a game that swings so wildly between two poles. In its more focused portions, Bayonetta is kinetic bliss that makes hand-to-hand violence into an act of love. But too often, the game devolves to its button-mashing, raunchy norm, adopting the puerile sensibility that is making Japan a less relevant voice in a slowly maturing medium.

Maybe Platinum Games had deliberately pushed the game so far over the top it became ridiculous and stupid, not out of an attempt to circle on round from stupid back to awesome in that out-there-crazy-no-holds-barred-explosion way, but as a direct parody of all of the previous games which have tried to do that. Maybe Bayonetta isn’t a terrible game, but is in fact the pure utilisation of irony to mock both the game manufacturers and its fans!
