Outside of that I can’t find much fault with Bayonetta. There are a couple technical issues, but nothing that hampered my experience in any way (screen tearing, most notably). It’s such a fantastic game to start off the New Year with, and while I haven’t been fully in love with Platinum Games previous efforts, they really knocked this one out of the park for me. I’m looking forward to checking out all the extra content the game is loaded with, and I can’t wait to put more hours into improving my time, ranking, and finishing up the two harder difficulties down the road. Definitely one of the best titles you can purchase at the start of the year, and not a game that I think any video game fan should miss out on.

This is a rare game in which the flamboyancy of gameplay can not be outclassed by the cutscenes. Kicking an enemy into an iron maiden, crushing him in the teeth of a giant vice, and rupturing every artery with a gargantuan chainsaw (ala MadWorld) happens in visually orgasmic real-time. Unfortunately, the frenzied action and the camera’s eagerness to capture every scintillating detail clash with chaotic results. You may find yourself reduced to a pin-point at the foot of a boss or disoriented and vulnerable as the lens zooms in for a perfect butt-shot. It is rarely a problem due to the superb mechanics of combat, but distracting nonetheless.

Most of Bayonetta’s attacks consist of using her weapons which, in most cases, are a set of four double-barreled pistols. Though, as the game progresses, she can swap these out for specialized shotguns, swords, and other implements of death. As she kills Angels and collects butterfly items, she gains magic she can use for her Climax and Torture Attacks. When your bar is full enough you can perform a Torture Attack on common enemies which will, in most cases, kill them instantly. These attacks range widely and include everything from placing the enemy in an iron maiden, dropping a massive spiked wheel on them and grinding them into dust. Climax Attacks tend to be reserved for bosses and kill them instantly. In most cases Bayonetta strips practically bare and summons a huge monstrous head to eat the larger enemies and bosses in differing ways.

Some people may label Bayonetta as nothing more than Devil May Cry with breasts and pass on this title, but they would be missing out on an absolute gem of a game. Terrible dialog aside, everything clicks in this game. The sharp visuals, the fantastic combat system, and the excellent voice acting all combine to make a worthwhile experience. We can only hope that this is just the first episode in a new franchise.

Bayonetta is a superb action title that gets props for still being very challenging for the hardcore action crowd, but accessible enough for less-skilled players to play – the forgiving systems in place allow for minimal frustration, which usually leads to said player becoming much more skilled than they were before. It’s got all the staples of the genre – over the top action, massive boss fights, a ridiculous plot, and a cool main character. In the case of Bayonetta, it’s a character not done often in action games, and it makes the game feel fresh despite being an evolution from the Devil May Cry formula. Given that the last DMC game was a disappointment, it’s good to see the formula returned to greatness with an action-packed, challenging, and ultimately fun game. In these busy first few months of 2010, Bayonetta has kicked the year off in style, setting the pace for what should be one of gaming’s finest years.

The level of hands-on camera direction that Kamiya and his team have applied during combat is key to the game’s truly riotous action. Whether Bayonetta is flailing through space in a huge clock, decapitating a two-headed dragon (which, confusingly, also has a talking cherub face in its belly), or summoning a gigantic eight-eyed parrot from her illustrious hair, Platinum Games always makes sure that the camera positioning is both varied and apt. Some Uncharted 2-esque quick-time events, which tend towards free movement rather than restrictive button prompts, are also on-hand to make sure that this pace doesn’t dip whenever Bayonetta isn’t busy sticking her katana sword into a gaggle of unruly angels.

Bayonetta is a tough game that makes mastering the controls important to your success. Pulling off combos and magical attacks, all will dogging enemies and a shifting landscape can be tricky. In this sense, variation and interesting surroundings assist Bayonetta to avoid redundant tactics like throwing a hundred enemies the player at one. This is one game that I would not be ashamed to run through on easy, although triumphing in a higher difficulty is gratifying, plus it will score you a few extra achievement/trophy points.

Bayonetta is the kind of game that makes me appreciate why I love videogames. It really defines a time when things were not taken too seriously and the focus was more on style and gameplay than anything else. The outlandish boss battles and over-the-top action really make this game stand out amongst its peers. It also helps that the action has been so finely tuned that gamers of any skill can pick it up and feel satisfied. Bayonetta is one of the most interesting game characters to be introduced in a long time. I just hope she manages to stick around longer enough to get a proper sequel.

Conversion aside, it seems churlish to complain. Sure, some of the checkpoints seem unevenly spaced, and there aren’t enough chances to visit the Gates of Hell to stock up on health and boosts – one boss battle that follows a long Space Harrier style shooting section was made twice as hard as it needed to be, because we’d run out of green health lollipops – but this artificial adversity only makes felling the big boys more satisfying. Bayonetta is all about pleasure (in gaming) and satisfaction (in victory). It embraces, and shatters, genre cliches; less a Devil May Cry clone, than the rare, raw DNA that infused Japanese games, before seductive Western ideals sullied their purity. It’s wiser than its forbears, but never cynical – and simply irresistible fun.
