It may not pack the same shock and awe as its next-gen cousin (the visual concessions made during multiplayer and occasional bug smack of an engine cracking under pressure), but the top-drawer gameplay makes Battlefield 4 a deeply enjoyable title regardless of platform. As one of the best multiplayer games available on 360 and PS3, DICE’s shooter offers a delightfully destructive send-off to the current-generation.

There are, however, some impressive set pieces, like the fierce tropical storm that steals the show during a city shootout, an improbable slice of dam-busting and a creepy underwater excursion to a downed aircraft carrier. Some of the sound design that booms out during these showdowns is absolutely best-in-class: it’s a phenomenal achievement when a war game conjures a genuine fear for your (albeit virtual) life simply by way of your ears. There’s no disputing that Battlefield 4 on current-gen is a great game, but we’ve got next-gen eyes now and having played said next-gen version simultaneously, everything makes the current-gen version seem like something much more ordinary. The 60 frames per second, 64-player online and the vastly improved visuals of the next-gen version is what makes Battlefield 4 a standout game, and without them, it’s a matter of more of the same. If you’re buying next-gen, I’d wait and savour the experience there. If not, you’ve still got a great game on your hands here. I guess it’s a win-win situation.

Battlefield 4 doesn’t break any molds, but whether you’re making your way through the glossed-up campaign or burning scores of hours battling online, there’s always a strong underlying sense of anxiety and uncertainty. You simply never feel safe. All the great things you remember about the series like realistic ballistics, balanced vehicles, and solid gunplay are here. If you can’t get enough of this stuff and new maps are all you need, you know what to do.
