In Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the Bad Company crew again find themselves in the heart of the action, where they must use every weapon and vehicle at their disposal to survive. The action unfolds with unprecedented intensity, introducing a level of fervor to vehicular warfare never before experienced in a modern warfare action game.

Though the campaign doesn’t top the brilliant set pieces found in Modern Warfare, the drastic improvements bring it near the level of Infinity Ward’s juggernaut. Placed in tandem with the exceptional multiplayer, Bad Company 2 is a memorable shooter that should be a favored destination on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for much of 2010.

The multiplayer component of BBC2 also feels really different because of the amount of teamwork that needs to be employed by players, even outside of squad play. Furthermore, being able to re-spawn alongside a teammate, in a tank or helo, or at a secure location means you’ll be able to get into the fight quickly, protect your teammates, and get into devastating positions even though you just fell in battle

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 isn’t good. It’s so good. There’s little doubt that DICE has secured its game a spot as the best shooter of the first half 2010, hurdling the impressive MAG by a few dozen yards. The multiplayer manages to feel completely fresh in the modern era, making the dual-shotgun wielding Modern Warfare 2 look like a fantasy game by comparison. The story might not be as impressive as some hoped, failing to match the humor of the prequel, but the multiplayer goes above and beyond the call of duty, providing the best competitive gameplay in recent memory. DICE has, once again, helped redefine the online shooter, and should provide fans of the genre a plenty of fun for some time to come.

Believe me when I say that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is a far better game than the 2008 release that preceded it. Not only has the technology behind the Frostbite engine been improved but the multiplayer shows major signs of improvement and a willingness by DICE to push the boundaries further. The single player campaign, despite feeling like an added component to a 100% multiplayer focused experience, is much more streamlined and interesting this time around.

All in all, just when you thought it was safe to finally stop playing war shooters, DICE pulls you back in with this highly addicting and energetic title that is satisfying in single and multiplayer. There will still be many gamers who feel like if you can’t “prestige” in a game it isn’t worth playing. Bad Company 2 really gives a strong reason to step outside the box of the multimillion dollar franchise and step in the boots of another soldier for once.

All in all, don’t let the rather generic and short single player campaign deter you from picking up Bad Company 2. The multiplayer is a fantastic gaming experience and without a doubt it gives Modern Warfare 2 a run for its money.

Not helping matters, cover is now more fragile than ever as DICE turns up its destruction to ‘11’ using their trailblazing Frostbite engine. You can still use this to your advantage, knocking ad-hoc escape routes through the walls of buildings by blasting them with grenades or C4, but on the flipside the foundations of these structures are more likely to come crashing down on top of you at inopportune moments – like so…

Do you like first-person shooters? If the answer is yes, buy Battlefield: Bad Company 2. If there’s a weakness it lies in the slightly brief single-player campaign, but the brilliant, potentially Modern Warfare 2 beating multiplayer more than picks up the slack. EA might be looking at its forthcoming Medal of Honor to get a Modern Warfare sized mega hit, but Bad Company 2 deserves good things too.

Graphically, Bad Company 2 is definitely a great looking game. There are several tweaks and improvements to the engine that make it much more of a looker than its predecessor, including some great depth of field effects and fantastic levels that add to the cinematic feel of the campaign. While there are a few hitches in the gameplay, including some pauses that go on a bit too long, the game performs generally well at a solid clip. However, the real winner here is the destructible environment, which is a great touch that adds to the realism.

Sure, a number of minor things got under my skin (some painfully spread-out checkpoints, crappy multiplayer unlocks, and a few bad online spawn points), but they’ll scarcely prevent it from marching into the homes of millions of people for me to blow up. It’s kind of like DICE has trained for a game development biathlon, resulting in its first game where the single-player mode is just as good as the multiplayer — and that says DICE has what it takes to be among the best in the business. In times when “modern” is the word-of-the-day for military-themed shooters, Bad Company 2 proves you don’t need to stand at the top of the medal podium — you simply blow it to goddamn smithereens.

Those looking at Bad Company 2 as only a single-player game might come away disappointed. It’s an action packed, gorgeous, and explosive game but it doesn’t quite come together into a campaign for the ages. It more feels like an added bonus to the multiplayer game and for those in search of that, this is a great choice. Bad Company 2 as an online shooter is flexible and engaging, offering several features that the competition can only dream of. If you’re looking for a more strategic and team-based change of pace, look no further. This is the game for you.

The use of C4 is illustrative of the difference between the singleplayer campaign in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and its multiplayer matches. In the campaign, the stuff is lying around all over the place, but it doesn’t serve any real purpose. You can use it to create huge explosions, but doing so doesn’t help you very much. In multiplayer, however, a sniper with C4 can set a deadly trap, or take out an enemy tank in heart-pounding suicidal gambit

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the Pepsi to Modern Warfare 2’s Coke. They’ll both scratch the same itch, but not in the same way. As a singleplayer experience, Bad Company 2 is mostly forgettable, which is a disappointment considering how entertaining the first game’s campaign was. Thankfully the multiplayer features are so polished and well designed that BC2’s shortcomings won’t matter in the slightest. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 provides an alternative FPS diet of raw battle tactics in an easy-to-digest structure.

That huge feel has always been the big differentiator between the Battlefield series and other first-person shooters, and Bad Company 2’s multiplayer has plenty of that to go around. Where the first Bad Company felt like a solid take on placing the PC-friendly Battlefield experience on consoles, Bad Company 2 settles in and feels right at home on both consoles and PC. This no longer feels like a compromise made to keep the console kids busy while PC owners wait for the next “real” Battlefield game. It feels a lot more like the genuine article, streamlined and bumped up to 2010 standards. If you appreciate the way Battlefield has done this kind of open, spacious warfare in the past, you’re going to love it. Fans of the previous game’s campaign mode, however, will probably feel a little disappointed.
