There are a few new gadgets which are all available from the D-pad, with several having quick-fire moves for use in combat. This is the only bit that skirts closest to over-complication. Left Trigger + Y for Batclaw is fair enough, but double-tapping Right Trigger for Freeze Grenades? Luckily there are only a small number of combat gadgets and none of them have to be used in battle, so it’s merely something to master rather than an annoyance – so it’s the good side of complicated.

I agree. Video game developers need to protect their intelectual property. Though putting out half a game. Which you pay full price for and than are required to go onto PSN or XBOX Live to unlock the rest for an additional fee is more of making another way to bring in more profits. If developers want to use that system? Then don’t charge full price on video games that have additional content you have to go onto PSN or XBOX Live to access.

Despite this review’s headline, Batman: Arkham City confirms a train of thought that originated when I saw Batman Begins: It’s not just a superhero action game, it’s also an inverse-horror game. Consider this situation: Four buddies hanging out in what can be considered a haunted steel mill. They talk about mundane things like what they did earlier that day, or their bets on which local community leader-type person will ultimately gain control of the area. In the tradition of horror movies, they stupidly split up. One of them hears a strange whooshing noise and runs off to investigate. One glimpses the quick movement of shadow around the corner. Then things get weirder.

It doesn’t take the world’s greatest detective to spot that this is an expertly crafted adventure, one that maintains a breathtaking pace and invigorating rhythm from beginning to end. Dizzyingly extensive and lovingly detailed, Rocksteady has created an intricate, spirited and unequalled playground worthy of one of the most iconic characters in modern fiction.

Detailing exactly how the combat has changed would reveal villains and spoil sections of the game, but I can say that the base tactics are identical to the last game and the new elements that are added allow Batman to approach different enemy types in new ways and also stun or down foes with a larger arsenal of moves. Batman can counter the attacks of three enemies at once – an acrobatic technique that involves a boot to the face and smashing the remaining foes’ heads together – and turns most combat opportunities into an agile, adrenaline-filled ass-kicking.

Batman: Arkham City isn’t perfect, but listing the little things I didn’t like gets in the way of all the stuff I adored. The voice acting, the challenges, the amazing opening, the unbelievable ending and the feeling of being the Dark Knight — these are the things that standout looking back. I’ve beaten this thing twice and still want to call in sick and chase Riddler Trophies.
