The game is a drastic departure from previous Assassin’s Creed titles, taking place in North America amidst the American Revolution. Set in New England between 1753 and 1783, players take on the role of Connor, a half-English, half-Mohawk warrior who finds himself torn between two worlds. Amidst the turmoil, Connor joins the Assassins and finds himself drawn to the revolutionary cause.

gamestyle.com review
Quite simply, one of the greatest stories of this gaming generation has just released its greatest chapter. Some complained of a lack of extras in the previous games. In this case, they will be complaining that they don’t know where to start. AC3 is one of the best games this year, and even the minor flaws can’t take that away. This is a must buy for fans of the series, and is a reasonable starting point for those who are yet to play any of the previous games. Hopefully this isn’t quite the end of Assassins Creed just yet, as the levels in the present day were very enjoyable indeed…

Cities are packed with people going about their everyday lives, from town criers and protesters to gangs of feral street kids and even animals. The countryside, meanwhile, is much more than a link between cities, serving instead as a hunter’s paradise, a fully-fledged battleground and when things are quiet on the assassination front, a place for Connor to rest his head. Having to load between new areas makes the environments feel less connected however diminishing the overall sense of scale, although it’s understandable with a game this big.

Games like this only come around once in a generation. Assassin’s Creed III is a beautiful, sprawling adventure that proves to be one of the most, if not the most, ambitious titles ever created. Just when you think you have it figured out, an entirely new element is introduced that enriches it further, rendering it one of the least repetitive experiences to be had with a controller. An inspiring testament to what can be accomplished with unbridled devotion, it’s possible that nothing of this magnitude will ever be attempted again. No matter if you’re a fan of the series, or even the genre, Assassin’s Creed III must be experienced; it’s a truly definitive event that will be looked-back as a crucial step in gaming evolution.

You can even assassinate Templars and infiltrate their forts to increase the Assassin’s influence and attract new recruits to the order, which you can in turn send on missions. Each activity increases your emotional connection to Connor’s home and to the land of the free that the story missions let you fight for.

Assassin’s Creed 3 was reviewed using an Xbox 360 copy of the game; however, we also played the PS3 version, and found no differences. If further investigation reveals any differences between the 360 edition and the PS3 edition of the game, this review will be updated to reflect those differences.

I never used to get chills playing a videogame, not the way I would watching some epic movie scenes or reading an incredibly engaging book. That has changed in the last few months and this game has set the benchmark. If you only play two assassin games this year (because let’s face it, you’ve probably already played that other one), make this one of them. I’d be very surprised if this doesn’t make Game of the Year for most.

When all is said and done, it’s hard to argue with how polished and deep Assassin’s Creed III is. From new game play elements like the naval battles, the expansive frontier, new multiplayer modes, and the smoothest combat to date, any fan of the franchise will not be able to put this down and newcomers will be awe-inspired by the world laid out before them.

Assassin’s Creed III is the culmination of a story and gameplay model that’s taken five years to polish. While not perfect, it makes a convincing case for the freedom and storytelling potential inherent to games over other mediums. An overwhelming experience in its own right, Assassin’s Creed III is the crown jewel on an already excellent series, and it sets the mind reeling about the potential for where the story goes from here.

Assassin’s Creed III is an unbridled success then, featuring gorgeous visuals, incredible animation, a captivating world to explore and a likeable hero in Connor. Desmond also gets to steal some more of the limelight this time too, which fans are sure to lap up. Newcomers on the other hand, may feel somewhat out of their depth in more ways than one. And while it fails to scale the dizzy heights that Assassin’s Creed II achieved upon its release, Assassin’s Creed III is nonetheless a truly stunning action game that’ll consume a good 20-40 hours of your time, before it’ll have you longing to break out the hidden blade once again for whatever Ubisoft has in store for Connor’s future. We expect spin-offs…

How long Assassin’s Creed will remain in newly non-colonial America is unclear but with a switch in setting at least every three years the series is proving that a change really can be as good as a rest. It also shows that epic doesn’t have to mean sprawling and unfocused. This a game that understands how to use its size to its advantage and as dinosaurs go it’s a real Tyrannosaurs Rex.

Multiplayer remains largely the same as AC: Revelations. You are welcomed into the Abstergo setup as a budding assassin and must showcase your skills against human opponents. A quick tutorial provides the basics of staying alive. You must pursue a target whilst being pursued yourself. Small maps make for interesting affairs, but it would be nice to see some larger variations. Hunting your enemy is an intense experience, especially as you have to watch your back at the same time. Competitive play doesn’t bring anything new to the franchise, but it is a decent alternative to the main campaign.

I expect most will come for Connor’s story in Assassin’s Creed 3, and they’ll find that it’s well told but detrimental to player agency. It’s sad to see the game lose sight of its assassin role-playing ideals in favor of bombast, bomb blasts and pig herding, so I hope this is but a momentary stumble while the franchise regains its balance. Trim the excess, remember the central thrust (hint: it’s with a knife) and then you’ll have a great game again. Assassin’s Creed 3 is the kind of game that’s just good enough to make you wish it was better.

Above all, despite the changes, the multiplayer component doesn’t lose sight of what made it special in the first place. The same can’t really be said for Assassin’s Creed III’s ambitious but ultimately disappointing campaign. There’s been much talk of the game being Ubisoft’s largest production ever, and by the time those credits have finished you’ll feel you’ve had reasonable proof. But as extraordinary as the scale and scope of this huge production can be at times, you’re left with a bloated reminder that bigger isn’t always better.
