Combat is only half of the Alice experience. You’ll spend equal time platforming and jumping your way through the hellish environments. Alice has a very handy triple jump to traverse long jumps which can be used in conjunction with a floating mechanic. Alice will also be flung around and catapulted around the environs by rushes of steam, bouncy mushrooms, and down slippery slides. The environments are simply a joy to navigate. The only complaint I had with the platforming is that Alice doesn’t have the ability to grab on and climb ledges, which results in a few cheap deaths when you’re only a foot short of the mark.

Jumping and floating to and from invisible (and did I mention often moving?) platforms, however, isn’t all there is to do in Wonderland. A pleasant variety of gameplay styles are scattered throughout, including slides (often made of something terrifying) with obstacles, side-scrolling shooting and adventuring, various puzzles, as well as the hidden Radula Rooms, which involve a small variety of challenges from riddles to hacking and slashing and splashing and peppering and smashing depending upon your weapon of choice.

Basically, you can break Madness Returns into three sections: combat, platforming, and puzzles. Sadly, the only section that requires any real effort is the combat, and that’s only when you’re forced to fight a large number of adversaries at once. The platforming, for the most part, is pretty basic. You jump and float from one area to the next, using the geysers and jump pads that have been strategically placed to help you. Occasionally you’ll come across invisible platforms that require a little more effort to cross.

Alice: Madness Returns has some high points and regretfully some low points. The highest point being that the level, environment and character designs are extraordinarily imaginative. Taking a page from the first game, Alice’s world she lives in and the world residing in her head are haunting to the last dreary drop. The good folks at Spicy Horse didn’t pull any warped punches to make the gamer extremely uncomfortable from beginning to end. For the most part the world inside of Alice’s head is broken, rusty and disconnected in so many places. For example, the first chapter of the game has you exploring the Hatter’s Domain, where you find the crazy-ass Mad Hatter broken into pieces in a clockwork land. Surrounded by broken gears, rusty caverns and lava-filled levels, nothing is right in this domain. The boys and girls of Spicy Horse Games really made sure to emphasize how positively broken our main character is from the first game through these warped and wasted visuals.

Combat here feels like a mix between Zelda: Ocarina of Time and modern hack ‘n’ slash titles like Dante’s Inferno. While not all available from the get go, you’ll eventually get your hands on two melee weapons (the fast Vorpal Blade and the slower but more powerful Hobby Horse), two projectile weapons (the mini-gun like Pepper Grinder and the more deadly but slower Hot Tea Launcher), a timed bomb and an umbrella that can deflect enemy projectiles. Each weapon can be upgraded by using teeth found along your adventure, and the two melee weapons can be used together to perform some basic combos.
