Announced at 2015’s E3 conference, Neilo and Ys Net’s third instalment in the Shenmue franchise, Shenmue III, got its fair share under the sun after its official reveal, and amidst the new console announcements, No Man’s Sky controversies and much more happening in the industry, everybody has seem to have forgotten about the highest-funded video game in Kickstarter history.
Shenmue III used to be in every headline weeks after the E3 reveal, but things have cooled down drastically in recent months. In case you didn’t know, the original Shenmue’s Game Director Keiji Okayasu joined the production team for Shenmue III. The announcement was made late July, with few major outlets reporting the news, which made me realise how much everything related to the game cooled down since 2015.
However, the game is reportedly still in development, with the studio opening donations through PayPal and the Chinese crowdfunding platform Alipay for those who missed out during the Kickstarter campaign. Shenmue III deserves much more recognition, even if the studio isn’t as active as it used to be during the initial period of crowdfunding and development. These games don’t experience major commercial success, but they have enough cult following to do well on release.
