Starfield: How To Cure Spaced & Terra Firma

August 31, 2023 by Kevin Thielenhaus

A cure for space sickness.

Right at the start of Starfield, you’ll have to create your character — and some of these choices can cause permanent buffs and debuffs. There are two traits in particular that can weaken your character depending on the environment. If you unlock the Spaced Trait, you’ll be weaker in the atmosphere of a planet, while the Terra Firma Trait is the exact opposite. These traits are available at the start of the game, before you even know what you’re doing. If you’re not happy with the Spaced or Terra Firma trait and want to get rid of it, that’s absolutely possible. These traits don’t have to permanently scar your character. You can remove them at a hefty credit cost.

How To Cure Spaced & Terra Firma

At the start of the game, you’ll create your character profile by selecting a Background and three Traits. Some of these traits can have negative side-effects — particularly, the Spaced and Terra Firma traits. The ‘Spaced’ trait makes you more acclimated to space, giving you a bonus to health and oxygen while in the void. But, you’ll have the opposite effect on the ground. The ‘Terra Firma’ trait is the exact opposite.

If you select one of these traits, they can actually be removed at any point in the game. Curing the trait will permanently remove it — giving you no positive or negative buffs or debuffs when in space or in the atmosphere of a planet. Here are the two traits that can be cured.

  • Spaced: Your body has become acclimated to space. Health and oxygen are increased when in space, but decreased when on the surface. (Can’t be combined with Terra Firma.)
  • Terra Firma: You’ve never acclimated to space. Health and oxygen are increased when on the surface, but decreased when you’re in space. (Can’t be combined with Spaced.)

To cure these traits, travel to any medical facility or doctor. The earliest doctor you can find is in Reliant Medical on New Atlantis. Travel to the MAST District on New Atlantis, then up the ramp and right to find the Reliant Medical building. Go inside and talk to the NPC doctor.

  • Any Reliant Medical doctor will cure this affliction. You can find Reliant Medical at most major settlements. One is located at Neon and New Antlantis, for example.

When talking to the doctor, you’ll have a special dialogue option related to [Spaced] or [Terra Firma]. The doctor will offer to permanently remove the trait for 10,000 credits. That’s a huge cost, and this is a permanent change. You won’t be able to recover the trait later. It’ll be gone for good. You also won’t be able to change your traits until a very specific and late part of the story. Choose wisely if you’ve decided to remove these traits!
