The combat in Morrowind was far from good. Instead of an active, action-based system, Morrowind's combat—like Daggerfall's—was handled through the rolling of invisible dice which determined if your attacks hit or missed, and how much damaged they did. 

It goes without saying that Oblivion was a step up. Gone were the dice rolls, replaced by a reactive system that took into account your swings and misses in real time. However, it was far from perfect, unaided by the poorly animated combatants who populated the battlefield.

In contrast to its predecessors, Skyrim's combat is hugely reactive and like Fallout 3's, actually satisfying to experience. With any luck, the next game—Fallout 4, or TESVI—will offer even better combat. 

Skyrim offers various forms of combat—melee, magical, and ranged, and a combination of all three. This article is a celebration of some of the finest skill shots we've seen, thus far.
