After the pandemic hit the world in 2020, we had a pretty tough transition into remote working. That pushed quite a few projects back that year and in 2021. Fortunately, that means 2022 will be filled with exciting video games that are well worth the pickup. Check our list below if you’re charting out what games to check out in 2022. In addition, we’ve got a few FPS titles that we think you should be keeping tabs on.
#25 Blood West
- Publisher: Hyperstrange
- Developer: Hyperstrange
- Platforms: PC
- Release Date: February 10, 2022
Blood West is a mix of stealth, horror, and FPS action, all set in the Wild West. Players take on the role of a gunslinger who has been brought back to life by strange spirits. As the gunslinger players will need to decide how they take on their opponents. Go in guns blazing or take the slow and stealthy route? Despite only being released into Steam early access in February 2022, Blood West already has an overwhelmingly positive rating. The game is fully playable in its current state and will be receiving content updates and improvements over the rest of the year.
#24 Shadow Warrior 3
- Publisher: Devolver Digital
- Developer: Flying Wild Hog
- Platforms: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One
- Release Date: March 1st, 2022
If you’re looking for a title that is over the top and KNOWS that it’s over the top, then you’ll definitely want to get Shadow Warrior 3.
Because this is a game that encourages you to go and “bring a katana to a gunfight” in order to stop an apocalypse that you kind of caused. Oops.
You and your sidekick (don’t get us started on the relationship of those two…) have to travel a vast world full of monsters and other enemies in order to get the pieces needed to put a dragon back where it came from. All the while unleashing a torrent of bullets, magic and sword strikes to keep your enemies from killing you.
Be strong, be swift, be epic, but most importantly…get the job done.
#23 Midnight Ghost Hunt
- Developer: Vaulted Sky Games
- Publisher: Coffee Stain Publishing
- Platforms: PC
- Release: March 31, 2022
When you think of the best First Person Shooter games, Midnight Ghost Hunt perhaps wouldn’t be your first choice, but trust me when I say that this multiplayer game deserves to be present. This supernatural game of cat and mouse sees players facing off against each other to be the best. Be careful though, once the clock strikes midnight, the ghosts become more powerful.
#22 Choo-Choo Charles
- Developer: Two Star Games
- Publisher: Two Star Games
- Platform: PC
- Release: 2022
Choo-Choo Charles is a horror game and a wacky one as well. Essentially, in this game, players are getting an atmospheric experience where you’re stuck essentially in a secluded forest area. Here we find that people are constantly terrorized by this spider-like train that freely roams around. In Choo-Choo Charles, you’re trying to take out this monster, but it will require players to use an old train engine to reach certain areas quickly. Players will have to gun down the enemy with a machine gun mounted on the train, but your train won’t be enough to take on this critter. So instead, the map is filled with various parts to upgrade your train.
#21 Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem
- Developer: Croteam, Timelock Studio
- Publisher: Devolver Digital
- Platform: PC
- Release: January 25, 2022
Serious Sam is an iconic FPS game, and chances are you’re already familiar with it. This time around, Sam is tossed into Russia. It’s a brand new large area for players to explore and fight off hostile alien beasts that have invaded mother Russia. Again, players can expect a standalone chapter for this long-running video game franchise. If this is your first time experiencing this IP, it’s a fast-paced, action-packed game that’s a bit like Doom. You’ll constantly run around and gun down enemies that swarm in. This is also coming out shortly after the launch of Serious Sam 4, which was released initially in 2020. Although it looks like since this upcoming release is a standalone release, you don’t have to go back and play any of the previous games.
#20 Instinction
- Developer: Hashbane Limited
- Publisher: Hashbane Limited
- Platforms: PC, PS4, X/S, XBO, NS, PS5
- Release: NA
Instinction is an upcoming FPS game where you’ll have to fight off dinosaurs. We don’t have a ton of information on this title just yet. However, from what we know so far, players are taking the role of an adventurer named April Summers. April comes across a new land during her travels, but she’ll find that this area is infested with prehistoric dinosaurs. Developers are looking to bring out quite a few different environments to explore. Whether it’s lush forests to dark caverns, you’ll need to be weary no matter where you venture through. There are ancient artifacts to uncover, puzzles to solve, and the threat you’ll end up having a deadly dinosaur sinking its teeth into you. Of course, just like a survival horror game, you can likely find scarce resources and an incentive to avoid drawing these hostile beasts to your attention.
#19 Ripout
- Developer: Pet Project Games
- Publisher: Pet Project Games
- Platform: PC
- Release: 2022
Ripout is a co-op horror FPS game that has players going through procedurally generated derelict ships. These matches will have players going through the ship in search of loot. However, you’ll soon find that you’re not alone. Within these ships are deadly and incredibly hostile aliens that will seek you out. Players will need to gather their loot, fight off the aliens and make it out alive. This might be a bit familiar to something like GTFO if you’ve played that game. However, we’re having to wait and see just how the two compare when the game actually launches into the marketplace. At the moment, Ripout only has a 2022 launch window.
#18 Leap
- Developer: Blue Isle Studios
- Publisher: Blue Isle Studios
- Platform: PC, PS4, PS5
- Release: NA
Blue Isle Studios has a new futuristic FPS game coming out called Leap. The game pins players against each other in fast-paced team battles. It’s what you would expect from an FPS, but matches will consist of up to sixty players. Also, since this is a futuristic setting, you’ll have a variety of gadgets to help you traverse the map quickly. This consists of jetpacks, grapples, hoverboards, to mechanical beasts. Right now, the game doesn’t have a specific release date quite yet. However, we do know that when Leap initially launches, you’ll find the game in early access.
#17 Boundary
- Developer: Surgical Scalpels
- Publisher: Skystone Games, Huya
- Platform: PS4, XBO, PC
- Release: 2022
Boundary is a new tactical team-based FPS game. However, this game is different because players are stepping into a unique setting. Players in Boundary are stepping into the role of an armed astronaut. Players here will be battling it out at different space stations in zero gravity. You’ll have a variety of weapons to pick from, like a typical FPS. However, now you have the advantage of changing up your position to get some unique shots against your opponent. So far, we know that developers will also offer the ability to further customize your weapons with different scopes, stocks, and grips.
#16 Scorn
- Developer: Ebb Software
- Publisher: Ebb Software
- Platform: PC, X/S
- Release: October 22, 2022
Scorn is a game that will catch your eye rather easily. It’s a first-person horror title that throws players into a nightmare of a world. Everything in this unknown world is full of flesh, bone, and steel. If you’re hoping to find out what this game premise consists of, you’re out of luck. There are no details on that front as the development studio is giving players a world where the goal is to explore and figure out what’s going on as you progress. With that said, the game is set up in a non-linear map filled with enemies and puzzles to solve. Players can also expect a survival horror element to this game since the developers have stated that Scorn will feature limited inventory with ammo management. This means that you’ll need to decide if you should waste your ammo on an enemy or potentially save the resources for whatever else may be waiting ahead.
#15 Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
- Developer: Fatshark
- Publisher: Fatshark
- Platform: PC, X/S
- Release: 2022
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide quickly draws fans in from the Vermintide 2 release. This is another cooperative multiplayer game where players are fighting off a swarm of enemies and creatures. We’ve seen several of these wave-based type of FPS games come out before. Fans of the Warhammer 40,000 franchise will see that this installment will follow a squad of Imperial Guardsmen dealing with a Chaos infiltration. This game was showcased already back in 2020, and it’s received quite a bit of praise. However, the 2021 scheduled launch did get pushed back due to the pandemic. As a result, we should Warhammer 40,000: Darktide come out sometime this year.
#14 The Anacrusis
- Developer: Stray Bombay
- Publisher: Stray Bombay
- Platform: PC, XBO, X/S
- Release: January 13, 2022 Early Access
The Anacrusis puts players on a stranded starship that’s venturing through uncharted depths of space. However, our protagonists on board soon find themselves face to face with hostile alien creatures. Players can go through this game with friends as they fight off a swarm of alien creatures. Fortunately, the game AI keeps things fresh with each playthrough. The developers will offer seasonal updates, but the game itself will adjust different item placements and spawn points. At the moment, the game is readily available. But, The Anacrusis is currently in an early access phase. So players can expect a series of updates to come out as the development team reaches the full game launch.
#13 Perfect Dark
- Developer: The Initiative, Crystal Dynamics
- Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
- Platforms: PC, X/S
- Release: TBA
Perfect Dark was a classic FPS for the Nintendo 64, and while we had a couple of installments that came after, it’s become a dormant IP. We haven’t received a new installment since 2010, but fortunately for fans of this franchise, we’re getting a reboot. One of Microsoft’s newest first-party studios, The Initiative, is working on this project with the aid of Crystal Dynamics. We haven’t seen much of the game in a long while, but we’re hopeful that 2022 will see the launch of this installment. Likewise, details are also very scarce, but it looks like the game is set in the near future, where the world is dealing with an ecological breakdown.
#12 Crossfire X
- Developer: Smilegate
- Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
- Platforms: XBO, X/S
- Release: February 10, 2022
Crossfire is a popular free-to-play FPS within Asia, but it will soon see a new release on the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X/S. Known as Crossfire X, the game will remain mostly the same, with players being split into two factions as you attempt to go through various game modes. However, we’re likely going to see a significant overhaul in terms of visuals, and we know that there will be a story campaign for players to go through. We don’t know what the story will be based on, but Smilegate is partnering up with Remedy Entertainment to bring out a campaign. While the game was scheduled to release in 2020, the coronavirus health pandemic outbreak has pushed this game, much like others. Currently, the game is now slated to launch in early 2022.
#11 ExoMecha
- Developer: TwistedRed
- Publisher: TwistedRed
- Platforms: PC, XBO, XSX/S
- Release: 2022
If you’re looking for a new free-to-play title, you might want to check into ExoMecha when it launches sometime in 2022. ExoMecha is a game that doesn’t have much information right now, but the alpha gameplay trailer has undoubtedly created a buzz online. So far, this title looks like it mashes up a few games together, such as Killzone, Halo, and Titanfall. There’s a lot to take in, but from the footage so far shown, battles are going on with foot soldiers, large mechs, and a range of different vehicles that can be destroyed or even hijacked. We know it’s being developed by TwistedRed, a new studio that got started up in 2019 to create AAA video game quality content that’s free to play for PC and consoles. ExoMecha will be their debut title, but we’re not sure just when in 2022 we’ll see this game release.
#10 Destiny 2: The Witch Queen
- Developer: Bungie
- Publisher: Bungie
- Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, X/S
- Release: February 22, 2022
The Witch Queen is a major expansion for Destiny 2 that introduces the new location of Savathun’s Throne World. Besides having a whole new story and activities to enjoy, you’ll be able to participate in a new raid called Vow of the Disciple as well as two additional dungeons as the expansion continues to be developed. There is also a new difficulty called ‘Legendary’ which is designed to be difficult but yield more rewards for those who complete it. It’s also important to note that this update removes much of the content from the Forsaken expansion and puts it away in the Destiny Content Vault including all of the campaign as well as the Tangled Shore destination and its activities.
#9 Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
- Developer: Gearbox Software
- Publisher: 2K Games
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, X/S
- Release: March 25, 2022
In 2021 we got the big unveiling of a brand new Borderlands game spinoff. Gearbox is bringing out an installment based around the chaotic and fan-favorite character Tiny Tina. Players will go through a high fantasy FPS filled with battles and over-the-top escapades in this game. Similar to Borderlands, you can expect that there’s bound to be plenty of loot to gather up along the way. Gearbox created the game with the inspiration of old-school tabletop D&D, and while there are guns, we know there is also some spellcasting involved. We’re still waiting on the premise to make its way out into the public, but we do know that players will have their own character to take control of rather than being Tiny Tina. Fortunately, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was developed to allow anyone to play the game. So you don’t have to play any of the past Borderlands installments to enjoy Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. Of course, with that said, if you’re fans of Borderlands, then you’ll likely find quite a bit of enjoyment with this game still.
#8 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl
- Developer: GSC Game World
- Publisher: GSC Game World
- Platforms: PC, XSX/S
- Release: April 28, 2022
Stalker 2 was something that developers tried to get off the ground in the past. While development was going on for this title for a small period, it eventually ended. Now it’s back in development, and there have been some details about what to expect when the game launches. We know that the video game will again put players into a bounty hunter type of role where you’ll head into the Zone, an area heavily radiated over the Chernobyl incident. While you seek out loot and information, you’ll find yourself also being sought out by mutated hostiles. In this game, players are stepping into a stalker named Skif. Apparently, your actions will shape the history of the Zone. We can expect an even more hostile area to deal with. Just like past games, this toxic Zone will release different horrific creatures your way to battle against. We also know that this is a game using the new Unreal Engine 5 so that should make for some thrilling visuals as well. Likewise, there is said to be multiplayer but this mode won’t actually arrive at launch.
#7 The Cycle: Frontier
- Developer: Yager
- Publisher: Yager
- Platform: PC
- Release: 2022
If you’re interested in a PvPvE game, check into The Cycle: Frontier. This game puts players onto an alien planet where you have to complete a series of contract goals. However, you’ll have different hostile creatures to battle against alongside other players. This is a brutal FPS as you seek out loot and complete your different tasks. With that said, you’ll need to reach the special EVAC ship to get out with your payload at the end of the round. Unfortunately, this game doesn’t have a release date quite yet. Currently, the developers are pushing to get the game out into the marketplace sometime within this year.
#6 Shadow Warrior 3
- Developer: Flying Wild Hog
- Publisher: Devolver Digital
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
- Release: 2022
If you’ve never played a Shadow Warrior game, then it’s well worth going back and enjoying them today. These are energetic and fast-paced action games. Players are tossed into a wacky protagonist named Lo Wang as he goes through different misadventures. Being a shogun, Lo Wang is armed to the teeth with weapons and can maneuver around the battlefield with ease. In the past, the games were a gore-filled mess, with crude humor and strong language, which we’re expecting with the upcoming third installment. This time around, we know that Lo Wang is forced to fight back a dragon that was unleashed from an eternal prison. It’s bound to be his greatest battle yet, and he’ll need enough firepower to hold back an apocalypse. Currently, at the time of writing this description, the game is only slated to launch in 2022.
#5 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Extraction
- Developer: Ubisoft
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, X/S
- Release: January 20, 2022
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six is receiving a new video game installment this year.Initially titled, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Quarantine, the game is now going by Rainbow Six: Extraction. With that said, this is another team-based tactical shooter somewhat like Rainbow Six Siege. However, it’s a PVE type of title where players are working together in hopes of stopping some kind of an alien parasite. It’s this parasite that proves to be hostile against players and if infected, players are only given so long before they are a lost cause if they are not healed. This tactical shooter has slipped by in 2021, but fortunately, it looks like we’ll get our hands on the game early 2022.
#4 Atomic Heart
- Developer: Mundfish
- Publisher: Mundfish
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, X/S
- Release: TBA
Atomic Heart has been on our radar for a good little while now. We have been waiting to give this game a try, but it continues to be labeled as a TBA release so far. Regardless, from what we’ve seen so far from Atomic Heart, this title takes place in an alternative reality where the Soviet Union continued to thrive while also making a ton of technological advancements. Players are stepping into the role of a KGB agent that might be mentally unstable. You’re tasked with visiting a remote facility that has gone quiet, and as a result, you’ll need to step in and see just what’s going on. We’ve seen plenty of combat, but the development team over at Mundfish has been pretty quiet in showcasing their video game. It looks like there’s some different mechanical creatures and supernatural elements you’ll be facing, but again we’re waiting on more information. Hopefully, we’ll get our hands on the game in 2022.
#3 Starfield
- Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
- Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
- Platform: PC, X/S
- Release: November 11, 2022
Starfield is one of the games that has been on quite a few players’ minds. This is the next big video game release from developers Bethesda. We probably don’t need to explain who they are, but these are the folks behind The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchise. We knew that Starfield was set to come out first before we finally got the next major installment to The Elder Scrolls franchise. Initially, this was a game that was going to release on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms. But since Microsoft went in and purchased the studio, Starfield has become a Microsoft exclusive. With that said, this is another narrative-driven RPG adventure set in the future. So far, we know that humanity has colonized space, and we’re taking the role of a space explorer. Players will likely meet with different NPCs across various planets in this epic journey. Right now, the game hasn’t received too many marketing materials, but Bethesda is aiming to launch this game towards the end of this year. That’s, of course, if we don’t see a delay that pushes this title out.
#2 Redfall
- Developer: Arkane Studios
- Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
- Platforms: PC, X/S
- Release: 2022
Arkane Studios just came off of Deathloop, and they are following the game up with Redfall. This is an action-adventure game taking place in the town of Redfall, Massachusetts. Right now, at the time of writing this description, the premise is still relatively kept under wraps. However, we do know the basic plot. So far, it looks like some experiment has unleashed a legion of vampires onto the town. Players will be picking through a series of characters to take control as you battle back against the bloodthirsty sinister creatures. Right now, the game looks like it’s a new take on Left 4 Dead and Back 4 Blood. Redfall will support multiplayer cooperative gameplay, but unlike the games referenced, we’re dealing with vampires instead of undead zombies. We’ll have to keep tabs on this game, but it does look like Arkane Studios will be pushing the title out sometime in 2022.
#1 Dying Light 2: Stay Human
- Developer: Techland
- Publisher: Techland
- Platforms: PC, NS, PS4, PS5, XBO, X/S
- Release: February 4, 2022
Dying Light 2 will again set players back into a world filled with zombies. In fact, the game will take place fifteen years into the apocalypse, where much of humanity has been cut down to nothing. Only small areas remain for those who wish to seek refuge, but oftentimes it comes conflicting factions. In the middle of the chaotic battle for power is our protagonist. Outside of exploration and fighting off the zombie threats, players will be dealing with these factions however they see fit. There is more freedom of choice than the first title in going about missions. A big part of the development for this sequel was making parkour and combat more connected. Players should think of the world as their playground. As you get used to moving around the area, there should be the ability to get creative during combat. Whether it’s vaulting around the area while lining up shots or getting up close for some intense melee.
Bonus
Bonus Project Ferocious
- Developer: OMYOG
- Publisher: OMYOG
- Platform: PS4, XBO, PC
- Release: NA
A bonus title worth mentioning on the chance it makes it this year is Project Ferocious. This is an FPS that puts players on a mysterious island. After hearing a distress signal, our protagonist ventures to an uncharted island full of deadly prehistoric dinosaurs and a mysterious group seeking to ensure the island remains off the map. It’s a game we’re eager to try out from the marketing materials released so far. However, at the moment, it looks like this game might not make it to the marketplace this year. So there’s a good chance this title will be featured on our 2023 anticipated game lists.
Bonus
Bonus: Plan 8
- Developer: Pearl Abyss
- Publisher: Pearl Abyss
- Platforms: PS4, PC, XBO
- Release: NA
Plan 8 is a game development team Pearl Abyss who you might know for Black Desert and the upcoming Crimson Desert. Unfortunately, we don’t have too much information on this game yet, and we’re not sure we’ll get it this year. From what we have gathered so far, this is an MMO where players are gearing up in high-tech exosuits as they fight off a new invasion of robotic enemies. It should be quite an action-packed experience, but we’ll have to wait for more information to roll out finally.
