10 Most Difficult Video Game Roadblocks Of 2020

March 13, 2021 by Kevin Thielenhaus

These challenging moments made us reload our saves most often in 2020.

Olmec [Spelunky 2]

Spelunky 2 is the hardest game of 2020. This is a game where only 1% of players will ever reach the true ending. Slightly more players will manage to beat a single loop. And the real challenge begins right near the start — the first boss, Olmec, is a huge roadblock for beginning players. Overcoming Olmec means you’ll finally get to check out the last 2/3ths of the game.

Olmec is a returning final boss from Spelunky 1, and he appears after completing two biomes. In Spelunky 1, you were free to explore the entire game without encountering any tough boss battles — not so in Spelunky 2. Olmec is even harder this time around. Like before, he stomps the ground, and your goal is to trick him into breaking through and hitting the lava pool. Olmec even has a second form, so experienced players from the original game can’t use their old tricks.

The Maneater Demons [Demon’s Souls]

Everyone hates the Maneater Demons in Demon’s Souls. 2020 was a good year for video game remakes, and the Demon’s Souls remake by developer Bluepoint brings the cult-classic PS3 action-RPG to the next-generation. The new version of the game on PS5 looks beautiful and retains all the weird idiosyncrasies of the original — and that includes some absurdly tough bosses.

You’ll encounter the Maneater Demons on a narrow bridge high in the sky of the Towers of Latria. The boss fight arena is obnoxious — one wrong move, and you’ll topple over the edge to your death. The boss can fly and will often swoop around, pelting you with magic attacks where you can’t reach it. After a few minutes, a second Maneater Demon will arrive to fight you, too. Because one tough boss wasn’t enough. Why not just throw two at you.
