More Upcoming Video Games of 2020

Final Fantasy VII Remake
  • Developer: Square Enix
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Platforms: PS4
  • Release: March 3, 2020

Final Fantasy VII was a massive hit when it first released for the original PlayStation and years fans have been pleading for Square Enix to go back and remake the game for current-generation platforms. After years of requests, Square Enix finally unveiled that Final Fantasy VII would receive a remake for the PlayStation 4 and we’re slowly gearing up for its release. The video game will follow the same premise of Cloud joining the Avalanche group as they fight against the Shinra corporation. All the highs and lows of this story will be presented to veteran fans along with newcomers to the video game installment.

Before you step into this adventure with Cloud and his friends, you’ll find that there are some changes made to the game. The most notable change to Final Fantasy VII is that the developer dropped the turn-based combat that the old school Final Fantasy games featured. Instead, this is an action-RPG which means that players will find the combat to mimic games like the Kingdom Hearts series. Likewise, don’t expect Final Fantasy VII Remake to release fully but instead Square Enix is sending the game out in an episodic form similar to the past Telltale Games releases or the Dontnod Entertainment Life is Strange series.

Tales of Arise
  • Developer: Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
  • Release: 2020

After its last release of Tales Berseria first hit the market back in 2016, a new installment to the Tales game is coming next year. Bandai Namco Entertainment is working on the next action RPG Tales of Arise at the moment for current-generation platforms. If you’re familiar with the Tales games, there’s a number of installments available but they are not always connected, for instance, the previous installment could be enjoyed without having played any of the previous installments which will be the case for this upcoming title.

Tales of Arise doesn’t have a ton of information out right now, but we do know that the story will follow two characters from two completely different worlds, Dahna and Rena. One of the worlds has been fortunate enough to be built up with advanced technology while the other lives in a time that feels similar to the medieval era. As a result, the advanced world of Rena is able to take control of Dahna and force those that inhabit the world into slavery.

Marvel’s Avengers
  • Developer: Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Platforms: Stadia, PC, PS4, XBO
  • Release: May 15, 2020

The Marvel cinematic universe is quite popular now and we’re also coming off from the incredibly well-reviewed video game release, Marvel’s Spider-Man. However, it looks like a new potential hit is in the works over at Crystal Dynamics with Eidos Montreal. The video game is Marvel’s Avengers, which has been a secret project for Crystal Dynamics but after E3 2019, we got the first glimpse of the game and what it will be about. Players will be controlling Earth’s mightiest heroes when humanity is caught in extreme peril.

The game follows after the events of A-Day, a moment in history where the Avengers unveil the new hi-tech headquarters in San Francisco. Things go awry causing a catastrophic accident that resulted mass panic and death. As a result, the Avengers disbanded and heroes, in general, were outlawed, but five years later, it appears that Earth’s only hope may come from the team putting aside differences and working together once again.

Beyond Good & Evil 2
  • Developer: Ubisoft
  • Publisher: Ubisoft
  • Platforms: TBA
  • Release: TBA

Beyond Good & Evil first hit the market back in 2003 and it easily left gamers itching for a sequel, but since its release, that fabled sequel has been under wraps. That was until 2017 when Beyond Good & Evil 2 was revealed, though unfortunately for those looking to continue on with the first narrative, this next title is actually a prequel.

We know that the game will follow our protagonist from a struggling pirate to a captain of a massive star-faring vessel. If this upcoming Beyond Good & Evil 2 is anything like the first title in the series then we can expect some entertaining narrative full of adventure. Likewise, this will be an open-world video game but it’s uncertain how active the in-game world will be or if there are events available to take part in when you’re freely exploring.

Cyberpunk 2077
  • Developer: CD Projekt Red
  • Publisher: CD Projekt Red
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
  • Release: April 16, 2020

Cyberpunk 2077 is easily one of the most anticipated video games coming out in 2020. This is being developed by the creators of The Witcher series, CD Projekt Red. The game will be an open world RPG but set in a futuristic world where crime and greed flourishes. Players take on a role of a mercenary who must take odd jobs and work up their street cred in order to gain the respect and the higher paying gigs. But how you handle these jobs and go about the game can be completely up to you. As a result, this narrative campaign will offer a few different endings giving some replay value. In fact, there was also confirmation that the title will start off players with a choice of three different prologues that will shape the character background story.

The world in Cyberpunk 2077 looks filled and apparently, there will be plenty of options of interactions along with mindlessly exploring the city. As the name suggests, there is a focus on tech in this game world with players having the option to make various augmentations to their body that may complement their play style or help in a given situation. Plenty of hype is building up on this game and we’re hoping that CD Projekt Red can deliver just as they did with their past incredibly well-received series, The Witcher.

The Elder Scrolls VI
  • Developer: Bethesda
  • Publisher: Bethesda
  • Platforms: TBA
  • Release: TBA

After years of dealing with constant releases of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Bethesda made the announcement at E3 2018 that the next iteration of the franchise is in development. The problem here is that we have practically no information at all about the game. Bethesda didn’t offer any details but instead stated that the next installment to The Elder Scrolls franchise will be a next-generation game and will release after their newest upcoming IP, Starfield. It’s likely that this game won’t release this coming year but crazier things have happened.

Likewise, it’s highly unlikely the title will launch on current generation platforms, outside of PC, as Bethesda has spoken of both Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI as a next-gen release so you may need to purchase the next Xbox or PlayStation 5 when it finally makes it out into the market.

Gods & Monsters
  • Developer: Ubisoft
  • Publisher: Ubisoft
  • Platforms: NS, PC, Stadia, XBO, PS4
  • Release: February 25, 2020

Ubisoft unveiled a brand new IP during their E3 2019 press conference. The video game is Gods & Monsters, a title that mimics the visuals of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but set in a Greek fantasy world. In the game, players must save the gods which have fallen from the Greek mythology creature, Typhon. Our hero must embark on a grand journey to defeat dangerous monsters and solve a series of puzzles. Another interesting aspect to the game development is that Gods & Monsters is the title being worked on from the team that brought out Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. It seems that the team is looking to dwell in Greek mythology a bit longer.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel
  • Developer: Nintendo
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Platforms: NS
  • Release: TBD

Nintendo offered gamers one special last announcement before they closed out their E3 2019 Nintendo Direct. In a surprise announcement, Nintendo is bringing out a sequel to their hit release, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We’ll avoid spoiling anything about the original title as it’s still quite popular and a game well-worth playing if you have yet to check it out on the latest Nintendo console hybrid. With that said, it appears that Link and Zelda will have a new foe to deal with after being discovered living below the surface. We don’t know anything specific about the game yet as the Nintendo Direct upload only stated that the sequel is in the works.

Minecraft: Dungeons
  • Developer: Mojang
  • Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
  • Platforms: XBO, PC, NS, PS4
  • Release: 2020

Mojang, best known for their release of Minecraft, has a new upcoming title known as Minecraft Dungeons. This is a different style of Minecraft game as players can’t build or craft, but instead will play the title as a dungeon crawler. Players will explore randomly-generated dungeons and defeat monsters, solve puzzles and locate treasures. While the game can be enjoyed alone, it’s best played with a group of friends with a total of four players embarking the journey.

No More Heroes 3
  • Developer: Grasshopper Manufacture
  • Publisher: Marvelous
  • Platforms: NS
  • Release: 2020

A new action-adventure hack and slash installment to the No More Heroes franchise is coming in 2020. No More Heroes 3 takes place after the events of Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes where a new alien invasion has occurred over an artificial metropolis. As a result, the world needs Travis to take out these new outer world beings and save the day. Since its been ten years between No More Heroes 2 and the upcoming No More Heroes 3, it will be interesting to see if this installment will be a good jumping point for newcomers to the franchise.

Twin Mirror
  • Developer: Dontnod Entertainment
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
  • Release: 2020

Dontnod Entertainment has a new episodic adventure title in development for players to enjoy. The development studio may be best known for their Life is Strange series but the next episodic journey coming next year is Twin Mirror. This is an upcoming psychological thriller which follows a protagonist named Sam who returns back to his old hometown to attend the funeral service of his best friend. Things take a turn for the worse when he awakens with no memories of the previous day while covered in blood.

The development team is setting players up for a mature adventure title and Dontnod Entertainment definitely has experience in delivering fans with morally tough decisions through their developed campaigns. We haven’t seen too much in terms of the game so far, but if it’s anything like Life is Strange and Vampyr, players will be exploring the surroundings along with being presented with several choices in which will have bigger consequences within the game. Regardless, this is one title that is turning some heads since its announcement and we’re certainly going to keep tabs on it.
