Wasteland 2 Developers Love the Unity Game Engine

October 12, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

A new update on the development of Wasteland 2 reveals the developers’ love for the Unity engine.

Wasteland 2

The Unity engine has been lauded as one of the most powerful (By whom? Citation needed!) graphics engines available on the commercial market, and it’s no surprise that Brian Fargo’s team at inXile is using it to power their upcoming game, Wasteland 2.

In a candid new interview with VG247, Fargo explained their rationale for picking Unity over every other engine available on the marketplace.

“We are loving Unity,” he said. “For this style of game, I can’t imagine us using any other engine. There are so many positives that are allowing us to focus on gameplay and not technology. We’ve been very outspoken in our love of the Unity Asset Store.”

He was of course referring to role-playing games, which don’t require as much hardware support as first-person shooters, for example. To say that the studio is now heavily invested in Unity would be an understatement.

“We’ve currently purchased over 100 assets that range from engineering scripts to environment models. I can safely say that had we picked a different game engine, there is no way we’d be at the point in development that we are now.”

Fargo says further along in the interview that the game’s design will be completed by the end of this October, with the full production to follow in the months ahead.

Wasteland 2 is currently looking at an October 2013 release window, but those who donated to the Kickstarter will be able to play earlier versions of the game well before then.
