Pokemon Might Finally Be Open About Its Complexity

September 28, 2012 by Patricia Hernandez

Pokemon is complicated, I swear!

It might not look like it, but under the hood, Pokemon is a ridiculously complex game. Hardcore fans are aware of this, and game the franchises' many algorhythyms to try to produce powerful monsters for battles. This is done by paying attention to hidden values like EVs and IVs, which influences the base stats of the Pokemon as well as how that Pokemon develops. This is why two of the same Pokemon at the same level might be wildly different from one another: they likely have different IVs and EVs.

Siliconera had an interview with Seth McMahill, Assistant Manager of Product Marketing at Nintendo. He spoke about the upcoming shifts in focus in Black and White 2, which sound like a divergeance from Pokemon's usual approach:

“Pokémon fans, in the past, always had to deal with what we call ‘grinding the grass,’ where after you get around to beating the Elite 4, it’s like, ‘What we do now? Keep going through that, or go fight in the grass where characters are 20 levels below?’”

He continued: “But this time around, this is a sequel. And all the core fans knew about [EVs and IVs] already. They’ve been talking about it constantly, and it was a big part of Pokémon. And although it was in the undercurrent before as you mentioned, this time we decided, let’s bring it out into the open. Let’s open up the complexity of Pokémon for people who want it.”

I don't know if this is just them telling us what we want to hear, because there's nothing specific in terms of HOW Nintendo is going to open up the complexity of Pokemon for us…but here's hoping it's true.
