Cabin in the Woods Could Have Been a Left 4 Dead 2 DLC

September 24, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

Just imagine, there was a chance you could’ve taken on the role of Chris Hemsworth.

Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods was one of the best movies this year, and easily my favorite film to date if only for how it managed to subvert the horror genre. It managed to do so by offering a backstory to all the tropes which have been in use by the horror genre since Freddy Krueger learned how to tap into the dreams of horny teenagers.

If you haven’t yet seen the film, go see it. When you’re done, come back and read this.

Incidentally, the Left 4 Dead duology (that’s a word now) handily subverted zombie movie tropes by featuring characters well aware of the ridiculousness of their predicament. Zoey, for example, was—and still is, if you consider her to be alive—a horror film buff.

Not unsurprisingly, the team at Valve was approached by Drew Goddard and his team at Cabin in the Woods for the game studio to create a downloadable L4D2 expansion pack based in the Cabin world. As a matter of fact, Cabin in the Woods even shows a small glimpse of the Left 4 Dead zombies in one of the monster cells.

"We actually were going to do a downloadable L4D2 expansion pack, where you'd fight in the Cabin world, but then MGM went bankrupt so the delay squashed it," said Goddard in an AMA session on reddit. "But the people at Valve were still cool enough to let us use some of their monsters to fill the cubes in the background (I had a lot of cubes to fill)."

The zombies from Left 4 Dead were supposed to be tied into the movie, with the survivors finding their way into some variation of the cabin and the monster demonstration facility beneath it. Given what little we know about the DLC, the cast of playable characters could've even been the ones within the movie itself instead of Valve's original four.

"By the way – the game was gonna be amazing. You were gonna be able to play in both the upstairs Cabin in the Woods world and the downstairs "facility" world with all the monsters. Believe me, I HATE all video games based on movies, they always suck, but porting Cabin into Left For Dead felt like the right fit. It pains me that it didn't happen."

I'm looking for a word that expresses how I feel about this. It rhymes with the word "fuck." And yes, that word is "fuck." Fuck.
