This Indie Game Is Kind of Like Reverse Proteus

September 21, 2012 by Patricia Hernandez

And kind of looks like it too.

Panoramical Teaser from Fernando Ramallo on Vimeo.

And incidentally this indie game is partially developed by an Proteus developer, David Kanaga. It's called Panoramical, and it was prototyped earlier this year by Fernando Ramallo in Kanaga's house. Not entirely sure if the project is done, but it's being showcased at both Fantastic Arcade this weekend and IndieCade, which happens next month. As for what it is….well, it looks a lot like Proteus in terms of art style, but works completely differently. As Fernando explains on his blog:

It’s a music and visual exploration game where you move sliders and knobs in a custom DJ controller (pictured below) and every change introduces or modifies elements to the scene visually while also changing the dynamic soundscape. The trailer above is made purely from gameplay footage.

As an installation based game it’s meant to be played with the custom controller in a big screen so it’ll only be playable at events for now.

Neat. And experimental…probably to the point that some people will wonder/argue if this is 'actually a game,' but the same could be said of Proteus. And if that's you: let me stop you right there and tell you that that's a worthless battle to fight and that ultimately we're considering these things as games/talking about them in game spaces, so let's just run with the assumption, shall we? You can pretend you're just like, humoring them, even. Whatever you need to do to give something new and exciting a genuine chance!

You can keep up with the development here, which might be important if you want to try out the game. Since it's primarily an 'installation' game that you might only be able to see at events; gotta know what those events are, eh?
