Torchlight 2 is Playable Offline, Single-Player Characters are Usable in Multiplayer

September 20, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

You can experience the joy of Torchlight 2 without ever having to log online.

Torchlight 2

Torchlight 2 is now available on Steam, and its release appears to have been an unprecedented success for the relatively small Seattle-based studio, Runic Games.

The game’s success comes with a small caveat as the studio was either unable, or unprepared to cope with the demand for the game: the account registration server is offline. To play in multiplayer, you’ll have to create an account on the Runic Games website and log into that account to participate in the matchmaking services the game offers.

We’ve been informed by official sources that the Runic Games is doing its best to cope with the demand for Torchlight 2 and that the servers are expected to come online fairly soon.

If you’ve purchased the game with the intent of playing it with your friends, I would advise you to play it in single-player mode—at least until the server comes back online. You’ll be happy to know that characters you create in single-player mode are usable in multiplayer, so you won’t have to encounter the hassle of having to remake your characters. Additionally, you can make as many characters as you want, so don’t hesitate to experiment with the game’s various character classes.

Unlike Diablo 3 and other current action RPGs, Torchlight 2 can be played offline and does not have an always-online requirement.

If you’ve not yet read our review of Torchlight 2, you can do so here.
